have heard of two employees of the New
York City Health Department named
Hermann M. Biggs and William H.
Park, who were responsible, respectively,
for the first efforts to conquer tubercu
losis and for the discovery of diphtheria
antitoxin; of Marion Dorset, chemist in
the Federal Bureau of Animal Industry,
who discovered a method of preventing
hog cholera which led to the finding
that yellow fever, smallpox, and measles
are caused by viruses, and whose work
has been ranked with that of Pasteur
and Koch; of another employee of the
Bureau of Animal Industry for 46 years,
John B. Mohler, who saved a good part
of the nation’s livestock when he de
tected the existence of various diseases
in an importation of Zebu cattle quar
antined in New York.
These are only a few of the govern
ment civil service merit system workers
who have served the public well and
made large contributions to human
progress.

District 4 is gratified to hear that
we now have a full fledged Executive
Secretary. We give him our blessing
and support and want him to come
up so we can look at him. We meet
the third Saturday of each month.
Bend Chapter held their regular
monthly meeting June 17, with a large
turn out and a whole flock of welcome
visitors. The honor guests of the eve
ning were Mr. and Mrs. K. B. Lathim
of Prineville. Mrs. Lathim was pre
sented a mirror with the good wishes
