The Indian H ealth Service supplies w ater and sew age disposal system s in the eleven cou n ty service area o f O regon. H ow ever in som e cases w e have been able to provide service in oth er areas o f Oregon w ith the assistance o f other O regon Tribes and I.H.S. w orking cooperatively.. W ho qu alifies for this program ? Any Siletz Tribal m em ber is eligible for this program and the good n e w s is there are n o incom e requirem ents for this program . The qu estion is w h a t do I do first in order to g e t sew er o r w ater assis tance? You m ust first obtain a I.H.S. application from on e o f th e area offices or the H.I.P. office in Siletz. Fill o u t the application and sign it and send it to the H.I.P. office in Siletz. Septic Systems th at are sp illin g efflu en t o n to the grou n d present a health hazard and sh ould be reported to th e H ousing Im provem ent Program for site evaluation from I.H.S.. H.I.P. w ill provide the necessary personn el deploym ent and proce dures to begin the process. This type o f situation is a definite priority for service. We also serve n ew hom e sites such as m anufactured hom es and n ew construction for residential hom es. It is im portant to g e t you r application re qu est to us as soon as possible for schedu lin g purposes. There is a w aitin g list and n ew septic system s can on ly be installed betw een the m onths o f M ay through October. Siletz Cultural Camp Aug. 12-15.1997 Sponsored by the Cultural D ep t./C o m m ittee We would like to’invite all tribal members to our four-day Cultural Camp on Government H ill from Aug. 12- 15,1997. Cultural classes and activities are still being planned. Class suggestions have been elder's panel, basket making, traditional food gathering/preparation, shell m aking language classes and storytelling Teepee's will be available on a first come firstserve basis, please phone us to reserve a teepee. Meals will be provided. Families are encouraged to attend. Youth under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. If you would like to attend, participate in any capacity, or have any suggestions, please give our office a call. Volunteers are needed to help make this encampment a successful one. We applied for these units in May, the last time that Indian housing development funds were available through HUD grants. These units will probably be added to the ones that we are presently planning for the Dickenson property, which would result in about 17 additional homes for Tribal members. HUD’s Indian Housing Program changes to a Block Grant Program Oct. 1. We are presently reviewing the new proposed regulations. Our primary areas of concern are the amount of funds that we will receive for housing operations under the block grant and the status of our Section 8 program here. The Tribe’s housing committee, which is made up of Housing Authority, Tribal Council, and Tribal Department representatives, is working on the development of a housing plan which is required under the block grant program. This committee will be making a recommendation to Tribal Council this month regarding the designation of the Tribe’s Housing Entity, as required under the new law. Two new Housing Commissioners and a new Housing Board Chairman took office last month. The new Commissioners are Kelley Ellis and Randy Austin, both of whom are Ournew Housing Chairman. ist3hannopt Case, who has been a member of the Housing Board for, about ftv e y e a rs .T h is w illb e a year W change and growth for the Housing Authority. Sue Hendrickson will be filling in for Tammy during h er absence. Sue H endrickson is very know ledgeable in all areas o f case m anage m ent system s. We are proud of our renters and homebuyers and the attention and care that they give to their units. Our elders have added flower beds to their apartments, which beautify the riverfront site. Visitors to our Housing Authority from other areas often comment that this is one of the nicest housing developments that they have seen. The reason for this, I tell them, is that our resi dente are proud of their housing and take good care of it.
