I would like to thank Denise Jordan for everything she did for my family during the death of my uncle Joe.. It has been a very big loss to my family and I can't tell you how thankful I am to you for all you gave to us in our time of need. Thank you for being such a great support to me at the hospital in Portland. I'm glad you were there. I just wanted you to know, sometimes things get so crazy that you forget to thank people for their support. So THANK YOU!!! The Siletz Tribe; the people from the Casino, those who called and those who sat with us; the people who . visited, who coordinated and sent food and flowers; Jack Quincey with his beautiful Indian color guard; Chief Depoe and granddaughter for their nice ceremony; Mary Jane Robb for her beautiful thoughts and memories of Joe; the Siletz Elders and Lily Rilatos. You all helped to ease our pain. Thank you all kindly. Tho my brother is away, he will always rem ain in our hearts and memories. His Sister, Gladys (Sis) Bolton Tribal Members, Wednesday November 27th was a sad day for the family and friends of Joe Lane. His funeral was that day. During the service the list of Joe’s Tribal accomplishments was long and impressive. The one thing that I am most proud of Joe Lane for was mentioned briefly.... he earned his bachelors degree at Marylhurst College. Joe told me personally that he had started college as a young man but family responsibilities stopped him from continuing his education. He completed his degree in his 70’s , a dream come true and a goal accomplished. This to me is a positive message to his family, friends and even those who disagreed with Joe. Tribal members, you can achieve dreams and goals of positive good in spite of what life may throw at you or what you may inflict upon yourself. Bensell Breon Just Beyond The Trees Dear Lisa, When you were small, while I held you close to me, I would give you measures o f my love just to set you free. So you, so small, could hardly guess that I could never love you less. More than all the leaves upon the trees, more than all the all the stars that you could see. God only knows the love o f ours, fo r you so young, could you never, ever be undone. So leave if you must, I ’ll understand and set you free. Find your spirit and you’ll come to see that we have set you free. Free is the moment in death and in birth. So you’ve lived your life fo r all it’s worth, and always remember that we all loved you first. 1 So go in God’s speed if you must, fo r we are all one spirit. But don’t forget that we are just beyond the trees. So, go and find a place to rest, just beyond the trees, fo r we are only seconds behind, just beyond the trees. (More Letters) Dear Editor, As a Siletz Tribal Member, I would like acknowledge the Tribes success on the following activities and events. Many of us had our doubts about moving the location of the Siletz Restoration Pow-Wow. I attended this year’s restoration Pow-Wow at the Chinook Winds. To my surprise, I would have to say it was one of the best! We had more people in attendance, And the staff and security at the Chinook Wind’s did an excellent job! As a Tribal Member living in Springfield, I would like to thank Joe Marmo for listening and sharing his expertise on prevention issues for youth. I have a 9 year old son and a 13 year old daughter. Addressing prevention issues and behaviors is an essential service that should be addressed at all area offices. Lastly, I would like to thank the youth services program for their success at the Halloween dance, And continued efforts to outreach to Area office youth has had a positive effect. The more often we can bring our youth together, We build on the future of our Tribe. As Tribal Members we need to acknowledge our success, and work together to solve problems with Tribal elections coming up. Let us hope that our new tribal Council will serve as role models, working together in a positive manner with respects towards all. Laurie Brown-Godfrey “A Service To Youth” Oregon Golden Gloves Dear Tribal Members: In mid-November the Oregon Golden Gloves Committee held a meeting with Mr. Burgess Harmer at the Chinook Winds facility. This meeting came about after urging from several tribal members and several proposals being submitted. The purpose of this meeting was to explore the possibility of hosting our Annual Oregon Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Tourn ament at the Chinook Winds facility. Our purpose and intent had been to give our annual event a definite Native American theme. Planned had been the participation of tribal teams, champions awarded Pendleton jackets, commemorative belt buckles and trophies generated by Indian craftsmen and women. Our organization is made up entirely of volunteers. It is entirely self supporting with no public funding. We believe the Golden Gloves program provides the absolute very best in drug and gang diversion. ..It fulfills in today's troubled and challenged youth a natural desire for recognition; a desire that otherwise might be displayed in delinquent behavior. Í997 9 Our organization has an excellent track record and has hosted numerous events for these young athletes in several fine facilities. Our com m ittee has met cordially and success fully with executives at each of these facilities. Each facility that has presented the Oregon Golden Gloves has gained much in return from this association. Each has invited our return. The Oregon Golden Gloves Association com mittee meeting with Mr. Burgess Harmer was an altogether strange and negative encounter. We found Mr. Harmer to be a bit less then charming, an abrupt and arrogant individual. We all felt insulted by his demeanor. The 43rd Annual Oregon Golden Gloves is scheduled for March 21- 22 at Portland Interstate Pavilion. Tribal teams from Montana, Wyoming and Minnesota are expected. Undefeated heavyweight and en rolled Grand Ronde tribal member Jeff Simmons is training daily for this event at Portland Grand Avenue Gym. We hope you will all plan to attend this legendary event, pick out a kid to cheer on, and follow his career to the Olympics... and beyond. (Continued on Pg 13)
