USDA UPDATE Submitted by: Charlene Holy cross Starting March 4th 1996 the distribution hours in Salem will change. Due to the increasing number of clients we will be a d d in g 4 hours to the distribution time, We will now be servicing clients from 3 PM to 7 PM on Monday. This will help accom modate our clients who prefer evening appointments. We would like to thank the following people for volunteering out in Salem for the month of February, Randy Butler Sr., Ben Lawver, Dennis Lane, Robert Morales, Juan Toribio-Lopez, Jose Ramirez, Florencio Toribio-Lopez, Teresa Mike and a special thanks to Cupcake who always does so much for us. Thanks again, to Robert, Juan and Florencio for sticking it out during the flooding. Luckily we had a big truck to get us out of the warehouse Wednesday night, the surrounding area had a least 3 feet of water everywhere. So everyone was tran sported safely home. We would like to thank the following people for volunteering on Valentines day, Dennis Lane, Chad Leno and Bev Owens. This was the make up day due to the weather conditions on Thursday February 8th. We were closed this day. Hoskins By: Robert Kentta April 13, there will be a Volkswalk event held in the Kings Valley - Ft. Hoskins area. The distance will be approximately 10k., over some slightly hilly areas at times. Dr. David Brauner - from OSU will be present as the walkers arrive at the fort site, to give some historical background and to give some comments on what has been discovered about life at the fort from 1856 to the time it was abandoned in 1864-65. Dr. Brauner led some archaeological testing and limited excavation of some features at the site several years ago. Benton County purchased the fort site property recently, and there have been planning meetings for a park on the fort site, with interpretive information available about the fort history and its relationship to the reservation histories at Siletz and Grand Ronde. Benton County has been very receptive - and has actually recruited participation from the Siletz and Grand Ronde people in drafting that text. Alissa Larson, a native from Montana, has been coordinating the meetings and keeping the tribes informed. She works for the Benton County Parks Department. She also coordinated a grant application that resulted in the tribes receiving some funding to cover costs of being involved in the park planning. Some of that funding came directly from Benton County. W K 91999 If any families have stories of family members that had walked the wagon road (trail) either to pack supplies back to the agency, drove team when the road was improved, or have any other information in relation to the fort at Hoskins, please call or write to me at the Siletz Tribal Offices. I am also looking for additional information about the Blockhouse at Siletz, and military presence on the reservation. The Volkswalk is a free event, there will be pins, etc. for sale, and people there to sign participants up to become regular members of the group - if they wish. If anybody wants additional information about the Volkswalk event, or the park planning process, please cedi me. Thanks.
