We Can Go Home!!!! MOU Signing to Take Place on the Rogue In 1955 one of our Chiefs said , "I want to go home to the Rogue River". A couple years ago one of our Tribal Elders echoed this same long time wish to be able to "go home", (home being the Rogue River area, the home of his ancestors). Others mentioned the problems encountered when planning events along the Rogue River, in obtaining permits from the U.S. Forest Service and the lengthy waiting period in doing so. This being the case, Frank Simmons 8 b Teresa Miller, members of the Interdisciplinary Team which addresses problems relating to land and water, contacted represent atives of the Siskiyou National Forest to see if an agreement could be worked out between the USFS and the Tribe to alleviate some of the problems and address mutual concerns. A meeting was set in Gold Beach approximately one, year ago. Representatives from the Siskiyou National Forest were more than willing to see if something could be done. They were encountering problems of their own, not always knowing who to contact on cultural matters, such as ancient burial sites or artifacts found in the Rogue River area. After one year of negotiation a Memorandum of Understanding has been completed and is ready to be signed between the USFS and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz. Representatives from southern Oregon and northern California Tribes sat in on the negotiations helping to insure that no stone was left unturned. Strong bonds were formed between the Tribes through this joint effort. Although this MOU will be signed between the USFS and the Siletz Tribe only, it's effects will be felt by all those who share ancient cultural ties to this àrea. The Memorandum opens the door to joint cooperation on specific problems or interests the Tribe may have pertaining to the Siskiyou National Forest. Specifically, the MOU states under purpose, " To provide a mutually beneficial process fo r the CTSI and the SISKIYOU to jointly identify, communicate and coordinate actions o f common concern relating to the management U B K T 1995 o f lands and resources, and provide a mechanism fo r continuing involvement in the development and revision o f land management plans." An official signing ceremony will be taking place on the Rogue River 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Septem ber 16 followed by a mini pow-wow. The site tentatively proposed for the signing will be Oak Flats treaty signing area. Feather dancers will perform at dusk. We are in the process of identifying camping areas that will be available. However, lodging at Gold Beach or Agness should be reserved as soon as possible for those who wish to stay in a motel. Not all of the details have been worked out to date so, we will have more information available in the next issue of the Newsletter.
