m ri9 9 9 Congratulations to the 1995 Siletz 8th Grade Grads! K ceremony was held June 13 at 7:00 p.m. at Siletz School to honor this year's students who completed the 8th grade. The pride fe lt by the Siletz Community & staff of Siletz School in these young people was apparant as the large gym was fille d with parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. It was a joyful celebration full of hope. And well It should have been, for the assurance with which these young people spoke and carried themselves reflected well on the education and community support they have received . The gym Itself was decorated beyond anything seen in recent history, with a balloon archway, and literally thousands of hand cut stars adorning the walls and hanging from the curtain on the stage. Speakers for the event included Fredda Butler, Dave Mooney, Mike Darcy, Janey Kenney, Ron VanDuesen, Ester Karlsen, and John Miller. Personality Awards were given out to each student (as chosen by the students) by S helly Sweat and Scott Paul. Certificates were presented to the students by Principal Mike Darcy. The 8th grade class of Siletz School, to be known as the class of '99 included: Jennifer Archer, David Anderson, Dylan Bandy, Kevin Barker, Shyla Bertini, Jessica Brummel, Jason Butler, Trish Carey, Jesse Chirrick, Angela Comstock, Justin Cooper, Miah Greathouse, Lisa Hafelfinger, Jericho Hibdon, Ester Karlsen, Issac Kentta, Courtney Kowtko, Alex Lewis, Bobbie Lee Lyons, Justin Mason, Travis Mason, Travis Middaugh, Stewart Nielsen, Danielle Payne, Jessy Ramsey, Joe Roeser, Bill Ruddiman, Darrin Smith, Jed Smith, Sarah Sorensen, Rick Sutter, Jacob Weaver, Nicole Wilkison, Calvin Williams, Steve Williams, and Josh Wilson. The names of these youngsters ring a bell w hen you th in k back on accomplishments of students we have printed throughout this year. We know that they will continue to make this community proud in the future. It is said that "it takes an entire village to raise a child". I think the "village" that raised these young people can be exceedingly proud. A Masters for Ann Marie! Former Tribal Secretary Earns Degree Linda (Lane) Merrill, who served as Tribal Council Secretary in 1974, was among those graduating from Chemeketa Community College on June 10. She received an Associates Degree in Human Services. Employed at Chemawa Indian School for the past seven years, she is presently a counselor in the Eagles Nest Program where she was recognized as Employee of the Year in 1994/95. Dedicated to working with Native American adolescents with behavioral and addiction problems, she plans on continuing her education at either George Fox or Marylhurst College. Tribal member Ann Marie Arnett graduated from Portland State University on June 12, 1995 with her Masters in Social Work, specializing in Social Services Administration. Ann will be beginning her career as a Technical Assistant for the National Indian Child Welfare Association, in Portland. She will be assisting Indian Tribes nationwide in designing and implementing programs in Indian Child Welfare, Family Preservation and Children's Mental Health. Ann was a recipient o f the Oregon Under-Represented Minority Student Scholarship. She has also received financial assistance from the Siletz Tribe which was greatly appreciated. Ann is the daughter o f Ken and Lorraine Hesketh and the granddaughter o f Alta Courville. Ann has been married to Chris Arnett for the past three years and is living in the Salem area.
