Dancing on the wind, caressing the trees, brushing the cheek o f a child, upon the wings of birds, rippling across the grass, reverberating through the soil, twirling and s p in n in g on a fancy dancers shawl.... the beat o f the drum comes to us, is felt by the earth, the air, the living things that dwell upon the earth. We hear the mournful aboriginal cry, that which comes from deep within, and the chant o f harmony and agreement. It's primal, it's real, it's the music and the heartbeat of the people which expresses all: sorrow, joy, honor, hope.... Pow Wow is a time for all of these things, a time we wait for, prepare for. A time to share all aspects o f the human existence. The joy o f a child's first dance, the sweet smelling babies who are new to the earth, the memories o f the old ones from years long past, reuniting of friends and family, news o f the past year, sorrow shared over loss o f those we love, things we have learned and experienced, and the excitement of the events to come.... all this to share in three short days. Nesika Illahee is a total experience to anticipate and savor. It grows and grows. Not only in size from one year to the next, but from it's infancy in September it grows through the year until it reaches maturity eleven months later in August. The labor of so many people comes together at the Pow Wow. Whether it be a labor of love, work bom from pride, accomplishments done to honor others, a paid task, or just fun.... the work is done by many, and for as many different reasons. What is accomplished by these dedicated people is amazing. From their efforts comes a once a year unforgettable event. People come from all over the nation to this Pow Wow. We've had tour buses o f visitors from Germany and Japan in recent years. What an impression this must make to those who have never been exposed to the Native American Culture......bells, feathers, drums, Indian Tacos, laughter.......certainly not what is written in the history books or taught in the classroom. Nesika Illahee is on it's way, you can feel it in the air. Get your regalia ready....and make the "little one" new moccasins one size larger than last year. It will be time to join in the Circle o f Friendship Dance soon. Candidates must be single with no dependents. •Candidates for Miss Siletz must be age 18 to 24. •Candidates for Junior Miss Siletz must be age 13 to 17. •Candidates for Honorary Princess must be age 8 to 12. •These age requirements must be met by September 30, 1995. You must be able to attend all designated organ izational meetings, activities, parades, fund raisers, and scheduled appearances, unless a written request is submitted to the pageant coordinator and the absence is excused in advance. You will be disqualified if you miss three scheduled events without just cause and your duties will then be performed by the first runner up. You must be drug and alcohol free; any misconduct will result in disqualification from the court. If at any time you become pregnant, you will be disqualified from the court. You must have full regalia. You must have a willingness to dance at all pow wows and scheduled activities. (Assistance with dance instruction will be available, if needed.) You must have a willingness to speak in front of a large group. You must be willing, by your behavior, to represent your Tribe in the best possible manner. You are expected to show good judgment and not participate in activities that would bring adverse publicity to the Tribe or yourself while you are a member of the court. The above quidelines apply to each candidate. If not honored, you will be disqualified from the court and forfeit any title won.
