June 1995 In M em ory o f Pauline Ricks: My heart is so heavy o ver the loss o f Pauline. What a talented, inspirational, and w ise p e rso n s h e was. How m uch s h e g a ve to the Tribe, the Pacific Northwest, and each o f us. During the restor ation movement, Pauline and I both lived in Eugene, ' SO , w e s a w a lot o f each other. I w a s tribal attorney : at the time. She w as ■ nlunurt giiting m e much- • appreciated advice, large and small. "Stop b y Stanley Strong's h ouse," ’ s h e w ou ld say, "and have a visit H e 's quiet but very d eep ." A s usual, s h e w as right. "Charles," she ; w hispered to m e in the line , at a potluck, "b e su re to take som ething fro m every bowl. That's h ow to b e polite." She ivas right ; about that, too. I think o n e o f the m ost exciting m om ents o f m y w hole life w a s the Grand Entry at the 1977 restoration pom -w ow , the first p o w -w o w on the Oregon Coast in 40 years. Tears streaming d ow n m y cheeks and shivers racing up and d ow n m y spine, I walked in the Grand Entry with Pauline amid the old sou n d s o f the big drums. "Don't f e e l out o f place, Charles," s h e said, "just walk softly on the earth, the w a y our p e o p le alw ays h ave." She was, o f course, right once again. A n d no on e has e v e r w alked softer on the earth than Pauline. What a grand lady. She has left all o f u s s o much. I send out my sym pathy and love to the Ricks, the Bells, and all my wonderful, life-long frien ds at Siletz. Very truly yours, Charles F. May all your dreams come true and never stop reaching for the stars. And may we wish all our Tribal Seniors the best of wishes. You all are our future. Not only does some Tribal members want it back, so do some whites. Is education riding a bus every day to Toledo? I’ve been told by the Assistant Principal that there is no prejudice in Toledo High School. I know that it does exist. It even exists in our own Siletz school now. I've been dealing with prejudice for some time now. I have seen the teachers protect one another and lie for on another. Does a student have a chance? No, automatic suspension. Is the student learning anything? No. Once you’re labeled in school, the label stays with you. We have a principal that is a tribal member and wort of all a Tribal Council person. Does that help our children? No, it's worse. At general council — Happy Birthday to Lisa Norton and Maggie Norton. Love, Warren, Peach, The Real Sheila, and Sheila Anne. —— A s a Tribal member I have the right to voice my concerns and opinions. I am glad that the Tribe has succeeded in getting what they want, "a casino". I know it will be a success. We have come a long way. Our Accomplishments include a clinic, a new Administration office, a lot of jobs (especially we don’t even need some of them) and now a casino. What more can we ask for? I feel that the Tribe is overlooking the more important of all. Education. In the constitution it states that tribal members on the reservation have the right to receive an education. Not having our own high school is really hurting our Indian children. I know that for a fact. What do we do? The Tribal Council needs to get our High School back and make that a priority. The Tribal Council has our present and future in their hands. That is why it is important to vote. The Tribal Council that lives out of the Siletz area does not know what goes on in these offices. They are not touched with the problems o f not having our own high school. Well, so much for the accomplishments.
