¿J, July 1992 — — ■ very hard to guess where one is, specially when you don't even know the states we are flying over. It is only four hours flying time from Portland to Milwaukie. I guess that it is worth the moments of nervousness. However, next time it will not be on an airline that has filed chapter 11, guaranteed. I had some good conversations with people on the plane. While flying over some state or states I could see these spots of green. All were in circles. I thought those people take the Medicine Wheel seriously to make everything in the circle. I finally asked a passenger if he was from the midwest. He said, "Iowa", I say "why are the fields all in circles?" The answer was to say the least almost embarrassing. He said, "central Irrigation, very simple". As we say , "Keep it simple, stupid". Jaws of Life By: Walt Klamath, Engineer engine 802 During the Month of May, the Siletz Valley held Bingo a benefit four Saturdays for the Siletz Fire Department, a benefit for the Jaws of Life. There was about 2,163 dollars raised. Steve and Colleen Rife furnished Indian Tacos. These brought in as much or more then the Bingo. This benefit was the brainchild of Frances Klamath. Gene Lasater, the Siletz Valley Grange Master set up the tables most of the time. Gene is very supportive of the Fire District, and the Volunteers. Most of the work was done by the volunteers of the Fire District. All of the money raised did not come entirely from the bingo itself. Many people came into the hall and donated to the cause in appreciation, of services that the fire department had given them. Sharky Schaefer, Maxine Rilatos, and Club 86 made cash donations at the hall. Rick Franklin made a substantial donation, this is not included in the bingo benefit total, so the total at this time is $2,663. We are over half way now to the acquisition of the Jaws. Many local merchants donated items for the raffle. Noel's Market and Siletz Lockers donated much of the food that was used for the Indian Tacos. Many Grange members donated pies and cakes. Some of the pies almost caused an uprising on the Reservation! They happened to be lemon pies brought in by Betty Hoffman, an excellent cook. Steve grabbed one and hid it out. He had a good hiding place, then the son-of-a- gun ate part of the other one! The contributors to this event were: Ben Franklin, Advertees, JC Market, Safeway, House of Bargains, Arrow Rental, Apple Peddler Restaurant, Super Suds Car Wash, Lumberman's, Cash and Carry, and Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., all of these from Newport; Noel's Market, Little Chief, Club 86, Siletz Valley Lockers, Siletz Valley Grange, Siletz Tribal Smokehouse and Siletz BP from Siletz. Toledo merchants were: Ace Hardware, JC Market and Mike's Pharmacy. Logsden: Logsden Limber mill. I personally appreciate all the effort in putting this benefit on. It took a lot of hard work and a lot of foot work, especially Steve Rife, who procured most of the donations. Thank you to Frances Klamath, who put the wheels together in the Bingo Hall and Gene Lasater, Grange Master, who set the tables up and helped take them down. There was much cooperation with all concerned. It was an enjoyable adventure. The area residents seem to think that the Fire District and the Volunteers are the same thing. They are not. The Fire District is supported by your tax dollars. This goes for maintaining the engines and equipment necessary for fire-fighting. The Jaws of Life and other items in the fire hall are supported by the volunteers. The Jaws of Life are a project of Volunteers themselves. As has been stated before, the people that benefit from these services do not necessarily have to be residents of the area. Anyone passing through could need our services. From what I have personally seen, Siletz is an efficient, helping machine. Of course I may be a little prejudice about the whole thing, but not much. I did have the opportunity to see the JAWS in action. They are not exactly what I had envisioned. The fact is, they are much more. They are a fast working piece of equipment. In just a matter of seconds, the top of a car, steering post, and other obstructions can be completely eliminated. Very impressive. Again, this .is an expensive piece of equipment to have, hopefully just to have in the fire hall to look at, but that unfortunately will not happen. The call said that the sawmill was on fire. The way that it turned out was the barn at the STEDCO site on Logsden Road was on fire. I do not know how much, if any equipment was destroyed in that blaze. It was a very hot fire, and fully engulfed when the Siletz Fire Department arrived on scene. There is a pond near the barn. Engine 801 drafted water from the pond using-the deluge gun. Approximately 1,500 gallons per minute had the fire knocked down and fairly cool within fifteen minutes. There being old hay in the barn and metal roof does not make these type of fires easy to put out, so we were sent back several times to put the fire out. The hay looks like it is soaked all the way through, I don't know what happens to the smoke. All looks good then a few hours later some neighbor calls that they are getting toxic smoke from the barn. It took about three days to completely drown the smoldering fire. We had all of our equipment at the scene. Toledo's Fire Department responded to Siletz, should there have been another call during this time. Any time that there is a major fire, there is an agreement that we will cover each other's district while the department is busy.
