PAGE 2 - SILETZ, OREGON January 1992 Letters to the E d ito r To the Editor: I would like to take a moment to thank all those congressmen responsible for g ivin g e v e ry fe d e ra lly recognized tribe huge amounts of financing for housing, medical & dental care. For without congressional support, we could all be councilmen, yet not receive a dime. I would project, after some Tribal Council have been serving for 6 years or more, that they would advance up the political ladder...could you imagine the support they could garner from positions as G o v e rn o r, C o u n ty Commissioner, or perhaps even Congressmen. It appears that 14 years of sending these people to Washington D.C. has only succeeded in wasting our timber resources. I read C ha irm an Pigsley's comments on our Tribe's commitment to pursue In dia n g a m in g . She states,"...the study and planning phase of this project will be Iona and difficult. As in the planning of any major economic development project..." She states in the proceeding paragraph, "...We don't view gaming as a permanent or long term project but a short term project..." This example of leadership is ludicrous...if we pursue Indian gaming, we should do this on a permanent basis. A negotiated contract with the state m ust be secured before any other action is taken. Otherwise this Council will throw good money after bad once again! The Timber Committee and Tribal Council has illegally interfered with the STEDCO Charter again. The firewood policy imposed on STEDCO is ridiculous...STEDCO has paid for all "firew ood" through the stumpage payments to the Tribe and it's logging costs! But obviously no one at STEDCO is intelligent enough to protect the STEDCO Charter purposes! A firewood enterprise is a very sound business and has the potential to employ many tribal members. One cord of firewood in the Portland area costs an average of $145! C urrently, the only individuals profitting from our tribal timber is those that work for the tribe and our Elders. This is discriminatory and could prompt a class action lawsuit to gain equal benefits. We've made it to a New Year - your vote can make it a great year or the S.O.S.! Kentta General Delivery Siletz, OR 97380 To the Editor: I am w ritin g in response to a letter published in the D ecem ber 1991 Newsletter by Monte Kentta. Mr. Kentta wrote about a "credibility gap" and, after reading his letter, I am convinced that the only credibility gap is his mindless accusations and misinform ation. He referred to our Tribal Chairman acting as Chairman of both Tribal Council and STEDCO. The STEDCO Charter, at that time, required the Tribal Chairman to be a member of the STEDCO Board. The STEDCO Board is required to elect from among it's members a chairman and it does so by a majority vote. The STEDCO Charter has since been amended and the requirem ent dropped. Our Tribal Chairman is no longer required to have a seat on the STEDCO Board. The accusation that our Tribal Chairman has led this Tribe illegally for the last two years is ridiculous, irresponsible and intentionally misleading. Mr. Kentta also writes about a per capita, the pay off of our Community Center, etc; ideas that have already been discussed or discarded. He advocates cutting off Tribal Council's travel yet he still has an outstanding travel bill from when he was a Council Member which he owes the Tribe to the tune of nearly $1,000 and he has never reconciled this debt. It's sad that Monte chose to resign his seat on the Tribal Council rather than continue to represent the membership, especially those who voted for him. The old adage is true, "anybody can kick a barn down, but it takes a carpenter to build one". Alfred Lane III Tribal Council Member Dear Editor: I am responding to the letter written by Monte Kentta in the December issue of our Tribal Newsletter. As a Tribal member I am appalled at Monte Kentta's poisonous pen! He needs to gather all the facts on all issues when writing. I myself have a problem believing anything this former councilman says! During the candidates fair in Salem, while you were running for Council, you, Monte, said it was wrong for Council Members to accept Tribal moneys of any kind and if you were elected you would not, yet you did! Along with the other issues you pledged to work, but did not follow through on. Also if you truly meant and believed in your article, why then did you choose to resign from your position on Council? That is the one way I would think that you, Monte, could have put your Tribal ideas forward. But instead, you chose to quit. So is anybody really better, Monte?? Both my daughters’ made the Honor Roll Award for the first quarter’ of the year. They both worked hard for this i award and I am. proud of my daughters.' Priscilla is a freshman at Taft High School.’ Trisha is in the 7th grade at Taft Middle School. , ' Their Grandfather is Alton I. Butler' from Siletz. Their Grandmother is Stella*, Fredrickson from McMinnville, Oregon. Priscilla and Trisha, keep up the good work!
