S IL E T Z , OREGON Dear Tribal Members: There is so much gossip going around about the ANDY VILES FAMILY CASE in Tribal court that it makes me sick. I am tired of hearing "Poor Andy doesn't have a job and it is all Phil Rilatos, the Siletz Tribal General Manager's fault." I know that Phil isn't perfect but he is doing as good a job as any o th e r G e n e ra l M anager has (a c tu a lly b e tte r). ‘ The problem is that Andy was given a directive on his job while being paid to do so and he decided, I am Andy Viles and I don't need to be directed by anyone, not even the General Manager. In the white man's world, if Andy was told to teach his class and he told the administration ,"not today", I bet my last penny he would have been, fired for not doing what he was asked!!! If Andy spent half as much time looking for a job as he has trying to make a fast buck dipping into our tim ber revenue dollars, he would: have< a, job taking ¡care of his fa m ily^ like. : every, other working person. A person* with Andy's education shouldn't have a problem getting a job. I know that sometimes it gets hard working with the Tribe but if you have to work, then w o rk th r o u g h your problems. I have worked for the Tribe for about eleven years (lacking 18 months). I had to fight for everything that I have. Nothing comes easy in this world, as my brother-in-law would say, "the only way to kill time is to work it to death." J give it my best shot!! I I don't think Andy Viles deserves $1500.00 for every month that he has been unemployed, because he didn't do his job. From August 89 to October 90 the amount Andy is asking for so far is $21,000.00 and he w a n ts m ore. Just $1,500.00 a month until he finds a job. How many years or months will that be? How much more money do you think that he should get from our jim b e r revenue funds? He has wasted a lot of work time, council time, staff time & more timber dollars with the trib a l attorney. How far is this complaint going to go? Is the Tribal Court really going to believe that nobody has to take a d ir e c tiv e fro m th e ir administration anymore?!!! I am a proud Siletz Tribal .Member who is an employee. I know th a t if it wasn't fo ry o u , the people, ! would not have a job; It's your head count that brings down the federal dollars to provide jobs for our people. We have Indian Health, dental and education benefits. I know that not ail members can receive if they live out of the area but the majority gets some type of help. I know what it is like to live out of the service area. It really makes you appreciate hoyy lucky , the people are who can receive help. Maybe someday j t will expand to serve a ll the Siletz Tribal Members everywhere. That dream is s tiljjn the future. The free benefits we have now were n pthing, but dreams for .som eone, years ago, but it became a, reality, Maybe not for you but for your grandchildren. That Is a comforting thought. Instead of picking our Tribe and the employment apart, we should be trying to help w ork through the problems and not make it look like a "Civil War". The Indian Health brought Andy's new baby into this world and he still doesn't appreciate what he has. Another thing that 1 would like to say, since I have your attention is a note to all Siletz Tribal Offices: Some of you make your clients feel like they have to beg you for help. We serve approximately 600 clients a month and. I receive a lot of Cpmplaints. Not one office has. been left out (including mine). REMEMBER, IF IT WASN'T FOR THOSE TRIBAL MEMBERS THAT YOU MAKE FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE, YOU WOULD NOT HAVE A JOB. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE. TRY TO PUT YOURSELF IN YOUR CLIENTS PLACE. ITS HARD FOR SOME PEOPLE TO ASK FOR HELP. I DID NOT MEAN TO MAKE ANYONE MAD OR UNCOMFORTABLE, BUT I FEEL BETTER FOR SAYING IT. Sharon Butler Siletz Tribal Member Letter to the Editor: I would like to compliment our Grand Ronde Pow-Wow Committee on the hard work they did. I was proud our Pow -Wow was a success. But I was very .disappointed to see the parking attendants couldn't distinguish the elderly from everyone else. Saturday Chet & Polly Butler, had to leave the Grand Ronde Pow-Wow-because they were told to park around back. Polly can only walk a short distance. Alton Butler had to walk from around back, and he's 82 years old. We parked by the rest rooms. We were told by my daughter. Linda Olson that we had to move. When we refused she called the Sheriff. He told us if we didn't move we would be towed away. So we just went on home. Parking for our elderly and handicapped should be one of our first priority's. What happened to respect for our elders. We collected enough to purchase her a silk flower arrangement I and a dozen yellow roses. She had back surgery on the 24th of October at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene and should be home and well on her way to full recovery as you read this. We miss you Bonnie, get well soon!!
