STEDCO SALMON ENTERPRISE NEWS FROM STEDCO Submitted by Michael R e e ls - BY: Teresa Miller According to STEDCO | Executive Director, Curt Mader, STEDCO is in the process of internal re-organizaion. STEDCO In the near future there may be more positions available however, they are still assessing their needs. STEDCO may be looking toward possible expansion in the future in regard to added storage space for the moss project. Presently STEDCO is marketing its' own brand-name floral moss which you will see sold locally as SILETZ INDIANS FLORAL MOSS in a newly designed bright red package. STEDCO Salmon products have been introduced to the MADE IN OREGON STORES. People are, receptive to the items and marketing may increase in the future. Curt also says that materials are being prepared for STEDCO Commission approval for assisting Sm all Business D evelopm ent involving T ribal Members with viable business ideas. SIHA UPDATE Submitted by Paul Mason, SIHA Executive D ire ctor < The new fifteen (15) homes Project #OR97B035002 will begin construction in the very near future. Pre-qualification packets for sub contractors and m aterial supplies have already been received at this office for screening and approval, j have sent a draft cop y o f a d v e rtis e m e n t fo r g e ne ral contractors who would like to apply for building the new fifteen (15) homes to HUD for approval. HUD in turn then submits advertisem ent to their lawyer for review. A fter final approval, Siletz Indian Housing will; then advertise for general contractors in the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce, local Tribal Newletter and other newspapers to be decided at a later date. The newspaper advertisement will run for two weeks and another two weeks will be allowed for all potential general contractors to respond. Following this deadline, all p o te n tia l co n tra cto rs packets w ill be reviewed by the Siletz Indian Housing with HUD to be ce rta in they m eet the qualifications and for final approval. After final approval, a general contractor will be selected and awarded the contract and begin c o n s tru c tio n . One of the first orders of business we would like to address is purchases for Tribal members and employees. STOP THE REPORT CARD REFLEX: The "report card reflex" describes the negative reaction of a parent--or other adult in a caretaking role with a child-stimulated by a child’s report card from school. The, reflex may take the form of physical action, such as spanking or hitting a child, or it may take the form of psychological punish ment, such as isolating a child from his/her friends or brutally verbalizing the child. The "reflex" is usually spontaneous, often harsh, and varies in duration; for some kids confrontation lasts only hours, while for others it may continue for days, weeks or even months. Parents should remember that Report Cards: • are sometimes the only communication between teachers and parents • generally focus on aca demic progress, but are to o ls fo r Reporting school behavior (usually problems) as well. • can provoke a range of responses from parents, depending on a number of factors. • are sometimes viewed by parents as being a direct reflection on them or a personal affront' NCPCA has produced an ad campaign to pro vide parents with an alternative response to the "reflex". NCPCA is encouraging local com m unities to sponsor activities which focus attention on the national problems of child abuse and neglect. Siletz Family -to-fam ily is a newly form ed group of interested community members who are working with the Siletz Indian Child Welfare Program and the N orthw est Indian Child Welfare Association to address these concerns in our area. S iletz Fam ily-to-fam ily has decided to focus its* efforts on two of the NCPCA campaigns; The Blue Ribbon and the Stop the Report Card Reflex Campaigns. BLUE RIBBON CAMPAIGN: The Blue Ribbon Campaign was started in Norfolk, Virginia by Bonnie Finney as part of her personal battle against child abuse following the death of her grandson- Finney tied a blue ribbon to the antennae of her van to increase com m unity awareness of child abuse in memory of her grandson, Michael Wayne "Bubba" Dickinson after his bat tered body was found in a' weighted tCdlbox FAMILY FUN FAIR PLANNED FOR JUNE 9th: The Fam ily-to-fam ily com m ittee is plan i n g a day of family orient fun and activi / ties on Saturday, June 9th at the Siletz Tribal Center. We are still in the planning stage for this event and we invite your par ticipation in the Fun Fair.
