SILETZ, OREGON, JUNE, 1985 - PAGE 7 CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF SILETZ YOUTH OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (YOP) JTPA News “ (Not a JTPA Program) The Confederated Tribes of Siletz will have a tribal YOP Program in the Siletz area ONLY this summer. This is a tribal Program, and there is no income requirement. Applications for the Project Leader are being taken now, and crew applications will be accepted on June 3, 1985. Tribal applications are available at Central Office and in Building Two at the corner of Gaither Street and the Logsden Road. The crew will work on outdoor beautification projects on Government Hill, around Tribal offices and at the homes of Tribal elders. The crew will work from July 15, 1985 through August 23, 1985 for six (6) hours per day, at $3.35 per hour. The Project Leader will work for eight weeks, six hours per day at $4.10 per hour. Applications for the Pro- ject Leader position are being accepted now. Barn school money this summer, and still have time to go swimming. Apply for the Siletz YOP Program. No family income restrictions on eligiblity. Bring your Tribal application to Allison Simmons at the Area Office in Siletz. PROJECT LEADER: Must be a Siletz Tribal Member Must be 18 through 21 (22nd birthday after 9-30-85) Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license Must have high- school diploma or GED Must apply as soon as possible by Tribal application SIX CREW MEMBERS: Must be Siletz Tribal Members Must be 14 through 21 Must have Oregon Work Perm it if under 18 Must be currently enrolled in school ’ Must apply by Tribal application beginning June 3, 1985. The Siletz JTPA Program will begin taking appliations for the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) on June 3, 1985 in the Salem, Springfield-and Siletz area of fices. ■ The SYEP Program will run from July 15,1985 through August 30, 1985, and lucky eligible participants will work six (6) hours a day for $3.35 per hour. The Counselor^ in each area will develop Work Experience positions that meet the needs and interests of the participants. If you are interested in this program, please come into the area office nearest you to apply. There are only four positions scheduled for each of the three Tribal areas. Ap plicants under 18 must have a work permit from the State of Oregon, and their parent or guardian must sign the ap plication. All participants" must be eligible for JTPA, which means that we must also document household in come if you live at home. Come into the area office and talk to a Counselor about this possibility for the coming summer. The Confederated of Siletz Job Training partnership Act (JTPA) has i ?fy/ ?ed the old CETA Pro gram, and serves all Native A i^ q J'an s and Alaskan Natives in the Tribe’s eight county sei y area. On-the- Job-Training, Work Experience and Classroom Training for participants needing GEDs or vocational training are available. The Employment Counselor must document your household income to see if you are eligible for the Pro gram, but eligibility requirements are different from other social or Tribal Programs. The Counselor will help you with all of the necessary paperwork. Both girls are Level I dancers in the Newport School of Artistic Movement. Sara Is the daughter of Delbert and Karen Bell and Alissa Is the daughter of Bud and Cheryl Lane. At this point he is undecided as to what he would like to do afte r graduation. Byron Keiser of Portland will receive his G.E.D. upon completion of one more test. The third Northwest Indian Nursing Recruitment Pro grams six-week Summer Enrichment Program, will be held in Portland, OR from June 22 to August 2, 1985. Students will receive six college credits from Portland State University upon successful completion of a Math 94 (elementary algebra), and a writing 115 or 121 (English composition) course. In addition students will spend one whole day per week in a preceptorship where they will be under the supervision of a nurse in a hospital, clinic, or private practice setting. The students will also receive instruction at the Oregon Health Sciences University, in Medical Terminology, Nursing skills, Study skills, and a lot of Career information and awareness type activities. • Speakers will include traditional Indian people cover ing topics such as traditional food, medicines, special needs of patients and health ceremonies. Tribal health, NPAIHB and Indian Health staff will provide role models as well as share personal experiences as Indian nurses.
