PAGE 2 - APRIL, 1985, SILETZ, OREGON HOUSING NOTICE! By Jeff Williams FROM THE C H A IR M A N : At the last Tribal Council m eeting, a decision was m ade to term inate the G eneral M anager. I am happy to announce that T ribal M em ber Phil Rilatos has agreed to be the Acting G eneral M anager. Phil will continue his duties as the Tribal Comptroller in addition to his respon sibilities as G eneral M anager. We a re fortunate to have someone as qualified as Phil to serve in this capacity. I w ant to thank all of the Tribal M em bers who volunteered to serve on our various com m ittees. Our com m ittee structure is vital to the T ribe’s governm ental pro cess and it is gratifying to know so m any Tribal M embers want to contribute their services. I reg ret th at everyone did not receive the com m ittee assignm ents that they wanted. We tried to give everyone his or her first or se cond choice. I think the result of our assignm ents will be active and responsible participation on all the com m ittees. Periodically, vacancies do arise, so I encourage each of you who might still be interested to subm it your nam e so that you might be considered when a vacancy arises. On another m atter, I am su re th at you all know th at the pow wow season has arrived. You should include on your agenda the recently restored Coos Tribe Restoration Pow Wow on April 13 in Coos Bay. I believe m ost of our Tribal Council plans to attend and I hope we will see m any of you at the celebration of another trib e’s restoration. A m ajor pow wow a t Chemawa will take place on May 3, 4 and 5 and I hope m any Tribal M em bers will participate. The students a t Chemawa work very hard to m ake this one of the finer pow wows and I am su re everyone who attends will enjoy it. Chemawa Alumni should keep an eye on their calendars for the annnouncem ent of the Alumni gathering a t Chemawa, which should take place around the end of May. M ark your calendars for the Siletz Pow Wow on August 16, 17 and 18. Our new Pow Wow Committee has already begun the planning process to m ake this the best Siletz Wow Wow yet. If any of you have any ideas or contributions to m ake, please get in touch with the Pow Wow Committee so the com m ittee can utilitize your se r vices. Welcome Back Alta Courville Shirley Strickler We would also like to Welcome back to Alta C ourville, T rib al council welcome Enrollm ent Clerk m em ber who was involved in Shirley Strickler back to a serious ca r accident. The work. Shirley has been in the a c c id e n t o c c u rre d w hile ! hospital because of back returning home to Salem problem s and until mid- after the F ebruary G e n e ra l> M arch was only able to work C o u n c il m e e tin g . It has been one full y ear since I cam e on board as editor of the Siletz News. We’ve seen a lot of changes dur ing th a t tim e. I have to believe th at the Siletz News has m ade som e changes for the positive during this last year. We used to rely on the Newport News Tim es for much of the work th at went into this paper. Thanks to th eir help and training alm ost all of our work is done here in Siletz. The layout and design and all photo work is handled by myself. This helps to save money but m ore im portantly it allows m ore freedom in putting the paper together. Deadlines a re not quite so tight as in the p ast and the news you receive is the m ost cu rren t th at it has ever been. We a re still dependent on the News Tim es for typesetting all our copy. However, I believe th at a t som e point in the future it will be to the T ribe’s advantage to do their own typesetting, allowing for an even b etter paper. If you a re a T ribal M ember, (or m em ber of another tribe), and are interested in being considered for employ m ent in a construction job I would like to put you on my list of workers. Please send m e inform ation on the type of work you a re interested in and your qualifications and ex perience. If you would prefer work in a specific location, include this inform ation also. I am also in the process of compiling a listing of Indian owned construction enterprises. If you a re the owner of a construction com pany and can provide m e with proof of Indian ownership (51 percent or m ore) I would be in terested in putting you on m y list of Indian contractors. P lease specify the type of work your company does, (e.g., fram ing, plumbing, electrical, supply, etc.) so I m ay have this information available for m y files. Box 549 Siletz, Oregon 97380 It is rew arding to know that our T ribal Council has an understanding for the im portance of a tribal new sletter. During M arch I w as able to attend the F irst Annual Native American P ress Association (NAPA) Conference. News editors and Indian journalists from all over this country and Canada w ere in attendance. Many topics w ere discussed. One of the problem s th at affected m any papers was a lack of support in funding from their tribal councils. Now, as in the past, m any councils fail to realize th at the tribal new spaper is the strongest link of com m unication between the council and their m em bers. I feel th at the tribal council has done a good job of utilizing the Siletz News to relay information to tribal m em bers and a t the sam e tim e have allowed m e to relay any and all perti nent information. Letters To The Editor D ear Editor: I am w riting about two things th at happened a t the G eneral Council Meeting I attended on F eb ru ary 2, 1985. F irst, the C hairm an did wrong in changing the tribal m em b ers’ concerns to last on the agenda. I know our concerns m ean little to her and she stated th at she changed it in order for the trib al m em bers to stay for the whole meeting, but isn’t it our right to leave anytim e we w ant to? I m ean, isn’t the “ G e n e ra l C o u n c il” th e “ tribal m em b ers’? Second, the trib e’s law yer shouldn’t be talking to any tribal m em ber like he did to G lad y es S tag g s. It ju s t shows he has no respect for our people and the Council has no backbone to put him in his place. Also, I wonder how m uch he charged for th a t day, to be a t th e meeting, sitting and not do ing a thing. Joella Kline P.O.
