Thursday November 19,1981 Page 2— Vernonia Freedom announcements “Mayor Proclaims Smokeout Day” Nov. 19, 1981 has been declared the “Great American Smokeout” by the American Cancer Society in an effort to awaken people to the hazards of smok ing. This date has been set as the day that cigarette smokers make a pledge for one day not to smoke. Since the American Cancer Society is continuing their ongoing educational programs to alert the public to the dangers of smoking, help smokers quit, and encourage nonsmokers not to start. Therefore I proclaim Nov. 19, 1981 as the “Great American Smokeout Day for Vernonia” when all smokers will be en couraged to quit smoking, at least on that one day, but hopefully for good. Coalition reaches compromise Over two dozen interested citizens gathered at the Senior^Center last Thurs day night to discuss options in dealing -with the Board of Directors of West Oregon Electric Co-op. Sponsored by the Columbia County Energy Coalition, a county wide assembly of groups and individuals coalescing around local energy issues, the coalition was responsible for pushing through bylaw ammendments at the Co- op’s general meeting last month. These ^ ammendments were designed to open up board meetings to the membership, and to provide for advance public notice and input regarding future rate increases. At Thursday’s meeting, originally designed to establish an agenda for deal ing with the board as a result of non- compliance with the spirit of the am- mendements as they were passed, many expected tempers would be high. In stead, due in large part to the unex pected presence of two Co-op represen tatives; board member Sam Hearing and Co-op manager George Smith, an at mosphere of compromise rather than recrimination was established. The credit union has approached the city trying to find a way to renovate the old City Hall. They plan to use the building as their new office space. The council voted to erect “No Park ing” signs on the west side of Weed Ave. from Maple St. to Cougar St. They also voted to install “No Parking” Signs on Birch St. from Pebble Creek Drive east, to the end of the street. Effective the first of the year all city -1 departments will be* required to maintain employee log sheets with the exception of the Police Department. Police of ficers currently maintain a log of their activities and the council considered ad ditional log sheets to be unneccessary. The log sheets are expected to help department heads keep better records on how city time is spent. “They’ll tell us if someone’s working hard, putting in overtime or if they’re taking too long on a job,” one council member said. Rose Squires and family The Columbia Education Service District Board will meet in special ses sion on Wednesday, November 18, 1981, at 7:30 p.m. in the Columbia Education Service District office, 1290 Deer Island Road, St. Helens, Oregon, for the purpose of discussing the budget with the Budget Officer. STUDY CLUB The life and works of Dorothy Parker were introduced by Mrs. Marvin Kanholz at the November meeting of the Vernonia Study Club. Ms. Parker, whose literary life covered a period of great social change, extending from prior to World War I through World War II and well beyond, was well known for her social satire and witty though often malicious epigrams. “Men never make passes at girls who wear glasses” is probably the most widely quoted of these. Mrs. Steve Hopper and Mrs. Bill Sword were extended welcome as new members during the\business meeting. The evening ended with the serving of delicious refreshment by our hostess, Mrs. Maude Wells. Notes On Folks Leisa Renslow, aged 10, travelled all the way from Las Vegas recently to spend a few weeks visiting with her grandfather, Ray Denman of Vernonia. Leisa says, “We also needed some rain at home, so I came up here to get it.” Seniors need papers The Senior Center needs your old newspapers.
