Vernonia Freedom—Page 3 Thursday October 15,1981 For That Once In A Lifetime One more Rubick’s Cube widow bites the dust by Charolette Klinger A frequent subject of cartoonists is a wife’s never ending struggle to gain the attention of her husband. Among the rivals most often depicted are the morning newspaper, sports telecasts, fishing and golf. There are football widows, grass widows, grease widows, and, now, there are “Rubick’s widows”. The latter being, of course, those wives whose husbands have discovered the latest craze in mental torture, the Rubick’s Cube. The Rubick’s Cube. For those of you fortunate enough to not know, is a small-plastic-multi-colored block with moveable sections. The object is to manipulate the sections in such a way that you end up with only one color per side. This is a feat which may take minutes, hours, or even years, depending on how quickly you discover that the only way to do it is to break the darned thing, segregate the colors, and glue the pieces back together. I discovered this secret almost instantly. My husband, however, hasn’t caught on yet. Directly following supper, Fred picks up the cube, makes himself comfortable in his chair, and isn’t heard from again until I turn out the lights and go to bed. Oh, there is a periodic exclamation of, “I’ve almost got it!” or “I know there’s a system here somewhere!” One night, I even got an intelligible, “Did you know that people have gone crazy trying to do this?” For the most part, however, my evening’s entertainment is limited to whatever conversation I can wheedle out of our Labrador retriever. Until Fred’s discovery of The Cube, my major rival had been his interest in Mr. Ford’s legacy, the automobile. • ! When It’s Over When Old Farmer Jones parked his Model T out in the com field, he planted a perennial thorn in the side of Womankind. My husband’s preoccupation with rusty old cars is boundless. His bookshelves groan under the weight of twenty years of “Hot Rod Magazine”. “Our” garage runneth over with primer gray fenders and Bondo-ed bumpers, and yet, whenever there is a car swap meet, he usually manages to find something that he’s “...been looking for for years.” I discovered soon after we were married that our vacations were not necessarily for the purpose of rest and relaxation, but were instead a means of scouting for abandoned vehicles and stray parts. More than once, our destination and route were determined by the location of an auction or a car meet. I’m not complaining. It’s just that my idea of a souvenir from the Yosemite Valley is not a headlight from a ’48 Ford.
