Of course, not all plants need protecting. Most green leafy vegetables and roots crops can withstand a rather hard frost and show little or no ill effects. The crops that need your attention the most are tomatoes, peppers, beans and all the short season squash varieties; which are the very ones you have babied along so carefully and are just beginning to harvest. Later on in the fall; a hard frost comes as a relief, almost, to signal the end of the gardening season. But, with several weeks more of good growing conditions, it can be downright between one or two ripe tomatoes - or enough to can to last two or three years. disheartening to watch all those beautiful leaves turn black, especially if a little effort the night before would have avoided this disaster. Now that the hottest weather seems to be over, your blooming flowers should start setting buds again. Hanging plants, such as fuschias, suffer greatly during hot spells. Now is the time to pinch off old dead blooms and seed pods, then water and fertilize and watch them take off again! Remember, they are heavy feeders and they use up nutrients in pots rather quickly, so a regular feeding schedule is important. Slugs are at their peak of egg production now, and each one you eliminate this summer will reduce next year’s crop by the hundreds. So, go after the slimy little devils! The best thing I have found to use for protection is old cotton sheets and thin blankets. Plastic sheeting is of little or no value in my opinion. It seems to conduct the cold temperature and thus provides very little protection. You should estimate how many covers you will need, then keep them handy. Dashing madly about at nine or ten o’clock at night looking for old blankets can be a problem at best. Of course, there will be a few false alarms; that is you will cover everything, and then find you didn’t need to. Better to be safe than sorry. Her sister Dana Hyde was “out” with a knee injury, much like the one that put Sheri out of play last summer. Although our second loss put us out of the tournament, we were happy with the nice things the umpires had to say about us. Here it is! The end of a season for the Vernonia Mets. (Remember us? We were the ones with the dunk tank at Jamboree.) I’ll try to fill everyone in on our last two weeks. August 15 and 16 we played in the Banks Barbeque Tournament. Our first game was against Oak Grove Tavern in some very warm weather. Those girls had the right idea and played in halter tops. But they didn’t keep their “cool” for long and we beat them 16 to 2. At 2:15 we played Casey Jones and lost 8-5 in 104 degree weather. At six we played another bathing suit troupe, Helvetia Tavern and won 11-3. Sunday morning we were up against Hillsboro T-Shirts at 8 am. We were ahead until the seventh inning when the score was 11-10. A homerun tied the score so we played overtime. We lost in the tenth inning 17-11. After the game the umpire quickly called both teams together and said, “Ladies, this has been the best women’s game I have ever umpired.” We were complimented twice in that tournament when another umpire told us we were the “Nicest bunch of ladies” he had every had the opportunity to umpire. Our two pick up players were Barb Fults and Sheri Hively. We’d like to say “Thank you” for your help. Sheri Back to league standings ... We took Fourth Place in the play offs. Dana Hyde and Dolly Keenon received All-star Trophies. Coach Pete Forgey accepted the fourth place trophy which will be on display at one of our sponors; West Oregon Electric Co-op. After the awards presentation, we all went to Poppio’s for pizza and to say congratulations to the first place team “Scott Farm Fillies”. The Mets are playing in one more tournament on August 29 and 30 in Cornelius. Scappoose and St. Helens have also invited us over for a fun game before the summer ends. I would like to say thank you to all the girls for their chatter and support this summer. As pitcher for the Mets I welcomed their words of encouragement. I’m already looking forward to next summer.
