Leave them alone. They do not hurt the plant at all. In fact, removing them will cause more harm than good. Speaking of harm, we have seen very few problems with insects in our com here in Vernonia. Once in a great while, we find a worm in an ear of com, but the damage it causes is slight. W e simply cut around the damaged kernels and go ahead and prepare the ears for the table. I would rather do this than to implement a spraying schedule. W hile you might get the worm that caused the damage, you would probably kill a few* b e e s m t h e process/ I f you absolutely must u s e ’an insecticide, use it sparingly and quite late in the evening, after the bees have gone B y now, your com should be about knee high, unless you planted one of the very early varieties. Y ou need to watch your corn carefully from now until you start picking! I f your com has exhausted the available supply of nitrogen in the soil, it will surely let you know by its unhealthy yellow- green color. I f you need to add nitrogen, you should consider adding a balanced garden fertilizer, rather than straight nitrogen. This way, you are taking care of all your plant needs and avoiding the possibility of prolonging the growth phase. You want your com to begin to make ears as soon as possible. A s r wjth tomatoes, over fertilizing will often delay your crop. People will often advise you to Extension agent visits Vernonia 9:30 am -12 noon at the W est Oregon Electric Co-op. Knowing when to harvest com is another problem. In the late summer, I find myself out in the garden feeling and squeezing the ears in an effort to determine when to pick. First of all, the com silk should be completely brown, in the center as well as on the outside. (Did you know that each strand of silk is attached. to one kernel?) The ear itself should be full and should fill out the husk so that there is no give when you squeeze it. O f course the sure-fire way is to carefully peel back the husk and take a peek. D o this only if you Eire pretty sure the com is about ready to pick, as you can’t help but damage some of the kernels. One last suggestion. This year, pick sm ear and eat it right out in the garden. I f you haven’t done this, you are in for a real surprise-and a treat! SAVE!
