Team platings found the VHS boys in third place with 95^2 points, behind PC, with 150, and Knappa with 141. PC boys won with 146 points, Vernonia boys placed third with 73. Athletes who placed first or second in their respective events participated at the state meet at Lewis & Clark College on May 15 & 16. ♦Brad broke the District 1 record with a throw of 140 feet, lOinches. STATE RESULTS Those athletes were Joe Batty, David Carter, Rick Andrus, and Stuart Harkson, the 400m relay team. Dave Carter also qualified in the 200m sprint. Girls were Angie Remsen, who missed placing at the State meet by one place, Tweedy McLeod, who qualified in the 400m run. Long distance runners for the team, Barry East and Christy Skinner, both qualified in the 1500m race. Brad Gardner was the only VHS athlete to place in the State finals. He received fourth place in the discus. At the spring sports awards assembly, on Wednesday, May 20, Track coach, Mr. Ron Remsen presented Outstanding athlete awards , to Brad Gardner and Angie Remsen, Most Improved Awards to Dave Carter and Christy Skinner. I Stuart Harkson of the boys’ 400m relay team rounds the corner toward the finish. VHS varsity cheerleaders selected Varsity cheerleaders for 1981-82 football, basketball and wrestling seasons were elected by a newly instated panel of judges on Thursday, May 14. The new format of selecting was approved by the student body during the elections held on Tuesday, May 12. The board consists of twenty-five staff and student members, including cheerleader and dance team advisors, staff members, class presidents and student council representatives, past cheerleaders and dance team members, and others selected to serve. Gigi Curl, Brooke Crowston, Kurstyn Hostetler, Becky Nice, Heather Remsen, and Gina Martin were chosen for the varsity rally of 1981-82. Prom Queen, Wende Morishige reigns over festivities Rain Forest Fantasy was the theme of the 1981 Spring Prom which took place May 23, featuring a court of queen hopefuls and the band Troubador. Wende Morishige was chosen queen by those who attended, from the court of Salena McDonald, escorted by David Borders; Wendie Morishige, escorted by Dick Titus; Cyndie Miner, escorted by Doug Bates; Vickie Pitt, escorted by Barry East; and Brenda Bodenhammer, escorted by Greg Schaumberg. Caterer for the occasion was Mrs. Sally Harrison, who served various dips, vegetables and crackers. SAWDUST VHS International Club took an outing to a foreign restaurant Tuesday, May 19. Freshman and sophomore boys’ health classes took a field trip to Riverview Abby, Wednesday, April 29, to learn more about the procedures involved with the preparation on bodies for burial or cremation. The classes are studying a unit on death and dying. While at the mosoleum, they viewed a body being cremated, and also one that was prepared for a funeral service. Officers for the student council of 1981- 82 were selected on Tuesday, May 12. Mr. Doug Tesdal’s advanced art and photography classes took a trip to the Oregon Coast on May 11 to take photos and paint watercolors of the coastline. Photographers who went on the trip are now developing their pictures for their final project of the year. ‘Everyone got a lot accomplished and they’ll have some very nice pictures to show for it,’ commented Mr. Tesdal. VHS all-school musical production of Bye, Bye Birdie netted $800 in profits, after production and royalty costs of approximately $1800 were paid.„ Advanced home economics class, consisting of Sandy Cota, Barbara Heath, Melody Sauer, Dianne Dickey and Becky Nice have recently been working at constructing costumes for the spring musical, Bye, Bye Birdie. Mothers’Day flowers were sold Friday, May 8 by the junior class, to help finance the Spring Prom. Combinations of flowers were sold at prices ranging from seventy-five cents to $1. Single Survival students held a pie baking contest Tuesday and Wednesday, April 29 and 30. Norman Mueller received a rolling pin for his first place entry, a chicken pie. Todd Shaw received a chef s whisk for his second place blueberry pie. On April 20, thirty VHS art and photography students submitted their entries to the 1981 Oregon Art Open, sponsored by Portland Companies, and held in the US Bank Plaza in downtown Portland. JV cheerleaders were elected by a panel of judges Tuesday, May 19. Those selected were Sonia Aldrich, Shelly Crabtree, Mary Keasey, Christy Skinner and Susie Smith. Mr. Ron Remsen, business teacher at VHS, has been selected to attend ‘Oregon Business Week’ at Western Oregon State College, in Monmouth, this August. He will join 32 other Oregon tachers and 300 students for an in-depth study of American Business. ‘Oregon Business Week’ is sponsored by the Oregon business community. Senior banquet was held Thursday, May 21 at the Evangelical Church. Menu included fried chicken, baked potatoes, relish dish, ice cream and cake, mile and coffee. Mrs. Peggy Brunsman was the guest speaker, and senior class members read the class* wills, prophecy and history. VHS forestry class traveled to Crescent City, California for a week’s stay. Five boys, Jerry Budge, Joe Richardson, Elmer Woodard, Dale Mueller, and Shane Cutright left Sunday, May 17, with their chaparone, Mr. Ralph Keasey, for a trip down the Oregon Coast, to study different . types of forests and to see the giant Redwoods in northern California.
