VHS Commencement Ceremonies May 29 Rv By Vickie Pitt Forty-eight seniors will participate in the sixty-fourth annual VHS Commencement Ceremonies in the gym on Friday, May 29, at 8:00 pm. Pastor D. J. Dickey will provide the invocation and benediction. Mr. Tom McCall, former governor of Oregon, will be the guest speaker. Mr. McCall is presently employed, as an editorial commentator at Channel 2 news in Portland. In 1968, Mr. McCall, then governor of Oregon, was promoting kindergarten programs throughout the state of Oregon. Vernonia was. one of the few towns which provided kindergarten for children. Mrs. Virginia David, teacherx>f the cl^ss, was a long-time acquaintance of the governor. She invited him to speak at a special graduation ceremony and he accepted. On a spring day in 1968, Mr. McCall addressed a group af youngsters, who are now graduating from VHS; In addition to Mr. McCall, there will be two speakers from the class. Karen Parrow and Kathi Rinks are salutatorian and valedictorian, respectively. Honor students of the class are Vickie Pitt, Karen Parrow, Kathi Rinks, Lana Green and Julie Gwin. Top five graduating seniors for the class of 1981 are (left to right) Lana Green, Kathi Rinks, Karen Parrow, Julie Gwin and Vickie Pitt. Officers of the class are: president- Shawn Stevens, vice-president- Ann Serby, secretary- Pam Steele, treasuret- Karen Parrow, student council representative- Cyndie Miner, and sergeant-at-arms- Dick Titus. Motto for the class is: ‘What lies before us and what lies behind us are small matters compared to what lies within us.’ Class colors are royal and sistine blues, the flower is a blue-tipped carnation. Serving Vernonia since 1933 Vernonia High School THE LOGGERS" Vol. 47, No. 7 May29,1981 0 play review VHS students put on a stunning performance , By Tracy Wilkerson ‘Wow!’ ‘That was great! ’ ‘I was really surprised! ’ ‘I really enjoyed it! ’ These are just a few of the comments uttered as parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles filed out of the VHS gym on May 8 &9. These families had just been awed by the stunning performance of Conrad, Albert, Rosie, and the rest of the cast in the musical production of Bye, Bye Birdie. An outstanding job Cannot be attributed to any one person; the entire cast did a sensational job! Amazingly, every person fit his or her role and did a terrific job with it. Dave Proehl and Debbie Jackson?, as Albert Peterson and Rose Alverez, did particularly fine jobs with their singing and dancing. Albert’s Put On a Happy Face, and Rose’s Spanish Rose, couldn’t have been performed better in a professional theater. Shawn Stevens and Lila Harrison, as Conrad Birdie and Mae Peterson, put an astounding amount of effort into their performances, also. Conrad sang like Elvis, and Mae’s accent was Jewish to-a- T. ' Brooke Crowston, . portraying Kim MacAfee, was the epitome of a fifteen year-old teenager. Denise Tracy, Robert Jackson and Mark Tracy, Doris, Harry and Randolph MacAfee, looked and sounded exactly like a middle-class American family of the fifties must have. Everyone in the teen chorus, teen trio, and the shriners were always right on the ball with their singing and dancing. Others, including Ken Hostetler, as Hugo, Monica Hogan, as the Mayor’s wife, Guy Richardson, as the Mayor, Melodie' Parrow as Gloria,Jack Price as the policeman, and Tammy McMaster, as the reporter, are also to be commended. And who could forget Maude. ‘Charles F. Maude,’ excellently portrayed by Mr. Ward Nelson. Technical aspects of the play, fulfilled by staff and students were fantastic. Musicians, Mr. Nelson on piano, Mrs. Marilyn Van Winkle on the organ, Lori , Taylor on the guitar and Jim Westbrook on percussion, deserve commendation for the performance in the role of pulling the show together. Teamwork exhibited by the cast and crew, helping out wherever it was needed, was an excellent example of hard work. Entire cast, crew, faculty advisors, and directors, of Bye, Bye Birdie deserve the deepest thanks for the hard work,, long hours, and absolutely fantastic job they did in bringing this play the Vernonia. VHS Track Team goes to State 'Math is fun in '81!' VHS mathemat ics students participate in festival By April Durst This year, interested students had the opportunity to participate in a math festival on the PCC-Sylvania campus, on April 25. Five categories of competition were offered, from general math to advanced math skills. Sonya Olson participated in the Algebra 1 division. Dave' Kleinman, Heidi Heisterman, and Rod Hammerburg participated in the geometry .division. In the informal competitions, students played games, like MATHO (very similar to BINGO) in which to students solved equations, then placed markers on a game An ensemble from the chorus, including senior members Salena McDonald, Debbie Jackson and Denise Tracy will perform We May Never Pass This Way Again. Mr. Art Parrow will take care of the presentation of awards. Junior class president, Leslie Sutherlin, will be announcing the seniors’ names while Mr. Randy Aultman, principal ot VHS presents the diplomas. Elementary students receive free books through RIF program By Polli Goodman RIF (Reading is Fundamental) could stand for Reading is Fun. It is a project that motivates kids to read and gives them a positive attitude about books. Each student in grades kindergarten through sixth, are allowed to choose three books from a display of more than three hundred. They are encouraged to make their own choices after browsing. The books ar^ then order, and the children receive them free of charge. ‘It is really satisfying to be involved in [RIF]. It is exciting,’ said Mr. Dan Sevig, district librarian. ‘There is something special about a child owning his or her own books and it is most satisfying to give books to kids who have very few at home.’ * Money for RIF books was raised through a book fair. Profits totaled $184 and $582 was added by the federal government. During the activity, 1116 books were given away to children eager to read. - Special thanks is extended to the parents and teachers of the selection committee who carefully chose the sample books, and helped in the distribution. Thanks to Mrs. Kathy Sevig, Mrs. Glenda Delemos, Mrs. Delaittre, Mrs. Abbot, Mrs. Vineyard, Mrs. Prohaska, and Mrs. Cadwallader. Entertaiment will be provided by the VHS band, under the direction of Mr. Ward Nelson. The group will play The Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Stars and Stripes Forever. card, over the correct answer. , Another activity took the form of a relay race in which students raced to a table to answer questions geared to their level of math. T-shirts, stating ‘Math is fun in ‘81’, were offered as prizes. Other, more serious competitions, offered scholarships and an opportunity to advance to statewide competition. ‘We had some fun in ‘81,’ agreed Mr. Mike McKee, advisor. ‘This was the first festival for us. We’ll have a better idea of what to prepare for next time. I think everyone enjoyed it.’
