Thursday May 14,1981 Vernonia Freedom-Page 7 OBITUARIES Funeral services for Clara M. Nice, 65, were held Friday, May 8 at 11 am at the Fuiten Mortuary Chapel in Forest Grove. The Rev. William Bash, pastor of the Emanuel Lutheran Church in Cornelius officiated. Interment will follow at a later date at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Mrs. Nice died following an extended illness Monday, May 4 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. Clara Margaret Nice was bom November 21, 1915 at Lodgepole, Nebraska, the daughter of Henry and Emma Potientsey Doelling. She spent all of her early life in Lodgepole and Hastings, Nebraska. In 1931 she moved with her parents to Hillsboro, Oregon. She was united in marriage July 18, 1936 to Leo Edgar Nice in Union County, Oregon. After their marriage they lived in the Union and Baker, Oregon area until returning to the Hillsboro community in 1947. Due to Mr. Nice's employment, the family lived in several communities in Oregon and Washington. They moved to the Vernonia area in 1967 where Mr. Nice preceded her in death in 1973. After Mr. Nice’s death she returned to the Cornelius and Forest Grove area where she has lived since. Mrs. Nice loved working with her hands and she was very active in knitting and artcrafts. She loved children. Mrs. Nice was a member of the Lutheran Church in Hastings, Nebraska. Survivors include four sons, Rolland Nice of Spokane, Washington; Billy Lee Nice, Forest Grove; Eugene Nice, Buxton and Steven Nice of Hillsboro; two brothers, Herman Doelling, Hastings, Nebraska and William H. Doelling, Cottage Grove, Oregon; four sisters, Louise Nelson, Grand Island, Nebraska; Ann Sauder of Thousand Oaks, California; Elma Cennanian, Camarillo, California and Lillie King of Salem. Nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the Oregon Heart Association or the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association. Martin E. Rainwater Martin E. Rainwater, 92, died in a Sweethome, Oregon nursing home on May 5,1981. Rainwater lived most of his married life in Vernonia, moving to Sweethome in 1978. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 9 at the Vernonia Evangelical Church, interment follòwing at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery, with Rev. Steven Hopper officiating at both services. Rainwater, bom July 12, 1888 in North Albany, Oregon, spent his childhood in the Albany and Marshfield areas. In 1915 he married Nevada Huber in Vancouver, Washington before moving to Vernonia. In 1961 Rainwater retired as a logger. He was a member of thè Vernonia Evangelical Church and the Moose Lodge in Hillsboro. His wife preceded him in death in 1964 in Vernonia. Rainwater is survived by two daughters; Thelma Bergerson, Vernonia; Bonnie Jackson, Monument; two sons; Ellis W. Rainwater, Sweet Home; Virgil H. Rainwater, - Hillsboro; ten grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. One son, Glenn H. Rainwater, preceded him in death in 1966 in Vernonia. To make the ‘Vial Of Life’ work, just follow these three easy steps: 1) Complete the ‘Vial Of Life’ information form. 2) Place the completed ‘Vial Of Life’ information form inside the vial and fasten the vial to the shelf at thé top right corner inside your refrigerator. 3) Place the enclosed, self-adhesive decal on your front door above the doorknob. The decal on your front door will alert emergency personnel to look in your refrigerator for your vital information. For further information contact your local senior center, fire or police department, or the council of senior citizens office in St. Helens. The Vernonia Study Club members were entertained and gained some knowledge of a pioneer home and it’s builder when Mrs. Marvin Kamholz gave the program at the regular monthly meeting at the home of Mrs. Stanley Wilkerson on Bridge Street. The James Grant Watts home in Scappoose currently houses city offices and two rooms of the Oregon Historical Society. Built in 1902, the home of the first mayor of Scappoose, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Watts was the son of one of the pioneer settlers of Scappoose and spent much of his life serving the city. His greatest contribution was probably in the field of education. The family holds several “firsts” in the area - public teacher, salt plant builder, preacher, lawyer, doctor and logger. Various pictures of the house were shown. Concluding meetings of the study club for the current year will be a * potluck on June 4 at the home of Mrs. Harry Culbertson. WhyisthePUD costing you so much money?
