Thursday May 7,1981 PUBLIC NOTICE SYEP BEGINS ENROLLMENT Beginning May 1, youth between 14 and 21 who are CETA eligible, may enroll for the summer youth program in this area. Youth 14 to 17 who do not yet possess a work permit are reminded to apply; and that the process may take up to three weeks to produce a permit. They must possess a work permit on the date of hire, June 15, in order to have a summer job. At the same time the youth completes the CETA application (given by the school counselor) an appointment can be made to see Jane Martinez, SYEP Intake worker, for an interview. Intake interviews take about 30 minutes to complete. On this appointment the youth will be expected to submit verification (proof) of eligibility; a process which may take from a few days to a week. There are a variety of jobs offered locally. Transportation to and from work is required. Work dates run from June 15 to August 30. Wages will be $3.35 an hour for up to 32 hours per week. This work experience will provide young people with not only income, but also good supervision and an opportunity to be exposed to a variety of different types of jobs. The residents of Vernonia are reminded that building permits are required under certain circumstances. For more information please call City Hall. JEWELL SWIMMING LESSONS This week, classes three through six of the Jewell Grade School, will be starting their swimming lessons. They will be taken by bus each Monday through Thursday afternoons through May 20 to the YMCA in AStoria. meeting will be on Tuesday, May 12 at 7 pm at the Century 21 Real Estate Office on Highway 30 at the south end of St. Helens. There are four ways you can help give the gift of sight and hearing* Wear a white cane emblem, donate your old eye glasses and hearing aids, and carry an Oregon Lions Eye Bank Donor Card. The Lions of Oregon are a major supporter of the Devers Eye Clinic in Portland. The Clinic each year serves some 7000 children and adults from throughout Oregon. There are approximately 200 eye operations performed each year to save or restore sight at no cost to the patient. Support the Lions White Cane Drive May 1 through 10. Wasn’t $17,000,000 enough? In November, the PUD Board received approval to obligate the citizens of the Columbia River District for a $17,000,000 bond issue. And now these politicians want to tax you $300,000 more!
