There are over 12 million problem drinkers in the United States. Every alcoholic affects the family members around him and oftln creates a need for help from clergymen, physicians, psychiatrists, social workers and the law. More and more family members and friends of the alcoholic are turning to Al-Anon Family Groups. Al-Anon provides a fellowship with a constructive approach to problem drinking. At present it appears there will be more job offers than can be funded this year, due to government cut in funds. Those positions funded (youth will be paid $3.35 per hour for 32 hours a week up to 12 weeks) will be determined on the basis of: variety of skills offered, quality of training and supervisory help, plus a match to youth’s own career interests. Beginning May eligible youth, ages 14 to 21, may pick up their4 applications for work permits at school or at the local employment office. Jane Martinez states, “no youth will be hired without a work permit.’’ From May 1 to June 1 all applicants will be interviewed with regard to CETA eligibility as well as job interests. .Vernonia, Clatskanie and Rainier youth will be interviewed in their area. Scappoose and St. Helens youth will be interviewed at the employment office in St. Helens by appointment. All youth anticipating hire are advised to keep in touch with school counselors for information and necessary forms. Lucey reports a variety of full and half time jobs available. She anticipates all hiring will be completed by June 15. In September, after the program is ended, an- evaluation will be completed to assess the success of SYEP.
