These special sessions will be held at the Columbia Education Service District office, 1290 Deer Island Road, St. Helens, Oregon. LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF MEETING OF COUNTY BOARD OF EQUALIZATION Notice is hereby given that on Monday, May 11, 1981 the Board of Equalization of thè County of Columbia, Oregon, will meet at the County Courthouse in St. Helens, Oregon, to publicly examine the assessment rolls for said County of Columbia, for the year 1981, and to correct all errors in valuation, description, or qualities of land, lots or other property assessed by thè assessor. The assessed valuation of homesteads assessed by the county assessor’s office in Columbia County, as entered on the assessment roll for January 1,1981, is 816 percent of the true cash (market) value of such property. The assessed valuation of all other taxable property assessed by the county assessor’s office in Columbia County, as entered on the assessment roll for January 1, 1981, is 844 percent of the true cash (market) value of such property. It shall be the duty of the persons interested to appear at the time and place appointed. Petitions for adjustment of assessments must be filed with the board not later than Monday, May 18, 1981, except when the filing of the petition at a different time is permitted under ORS 309.026 ‘(for homestead property only), 309.035 or 309.103. Mrs. Rinkes was on a trip with her family to La Grande to attend the Baptism of Pat Potts when she suddenly fell ill and passed away Thursday April30,1981 Senior citizens met last Friday at the Jewell Grange Hall. Mrs. Myrtle Slanger was hostess for the group having returned from a lengthy trip through Arizona and Mexico. A very nice pot luck luncheon was served at noon. Some of the seniors brought PUBLIC FORUM in a La Grande hospital. Mrs. Rinkes was born June 12, 1936 in Oregon City, the daughter of Theodore and Margaret Battaglia Bruck. She was married to John Rinkes November 12, 1955. Surviving is her husband John, Jewell, four daughters, Mrs. Susan Ferguson, Virginia Beach, Va., Connie Rinkes, Astoria and Julie and Lisa Rinkes at home, and a brother William Bruck, Wilsonville. Burial services were held Thursday April 23 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Astoria. Recitation of the Rosary was held the evening before at Hughes-Ransom Mortuary. “He’s the best dressed guy in the town”. Benjamin Dale Chase arrived in Jewell April 15, the son of Dale and Virginia Chase and grandson of Bud and Florence Chase. Benjamin Chase was bom at 7:52 pm April 6, 1981 weighing in at 8 lbs. with lots of beautiful black hair. Wednesday evening, April 22, young Ben and his mother were guests at a lovely baby shower given in his honor. Mrs. Judy Layman, Mrs. Loretta Hale, and Mrs. Susan Wilcoxen hosted the shower at which over 80 ladies attended. Cake, decorated in traditional blue and white, punch and coffee were served. Mrs. Alice Olstadt was winner of the “Pin” game. The Chinese cooking class is certainly interesting. Led by Lila - Chan of Astoria, the class consists of twelve members. Those enjoying the Thursday evening class and meal are; Steve Whiteman, Mark Erickson, Elsie Hammerberg, Inga Hershey, Rosie Berdine, Ann Reeher, Pat Samuelson, Olivia Downing, Millie Calvert, Lola Stauffer, Ruth Nogle and Judy Layman. Four classes have already been held from a series of ten. Among some of the dishes already made are; won tons, Chinese money bags, pineapple chicken, coriander salad, fried rice, shrimp foo yung, stir fried beef with broccoli and shrimp squares. Besides learning and cooking these exotic foods, we all get to eat the results of the evening’s instruction. Francis Nordstrom brought some lovely tasty squash to share with anyone who wanted it. Hank and Shirley Jensen came for their first time and Mrs. Amelia Hickey (94 years old) again visited the'group and played Bingo with some, while the rest played pinochle. ITS THE LITTLE THINGS THATCOUNT The 81 year old historic Shirley Colvin Nusom homestead in Marshland, with its charming freshly painted porches, hosted a baby shower first for the Columbia County Historical Society. What a lucky baby to have 26 doting grandmothers and eight future grandfathers present honoring (expecting in June) Jenelle Wiggins-Wysong of Keasey for her two years of tremendous help in publishing the annual .county history book. After all these years the ladies enjoyed the potluck dinner and numerous baby items. Thanks to all who participated. Attention all green thumbers!
