Thursday April23,1981 Vernonia Freedom—Page 5 "Bye-Bye Birdie" presented by Polli Goodman An all school production of the stage musical ‘Bye-Bye Birdie’ will be presented in the Vernonia High School auditorium on May 8 and 9 at 8 pm. Preparations for the play started in mid-January. Auditions were held the first week in February with each student auditioning in three different areas. Ward Nelson, music director, auditioned students for the singing parts in the play. Karen Alvstad, Choreographer, auditioned students for the dancing parts of the play. Randy Stevens and Kathey Sevig, directors, auditioned students for the acting parts, where they read over scenes of the play. The directors cast the play by the person’s ability to take directions, their voice projection, their interpretation of the character, and by how well they fit the requirements of the part. Studded tires on Oregon’s highways are illegal after April 30, H. Scott Coulter, state highway engineer, said today. Many staff members are involved with the play this year as technical advisors. These include Jeff Smith, Brian Montgomery and Mark Pettijohn working with the lighting crews. Terry Nimz is Working with the sets and props crew and Claurice Schorzman is working with the costume crew. Sally Harrison is working with the make-up and hair-do crew and Nancy Eckland is working with the publicity crew. Karen Parrow is the stage manager and student technical director. The technical crews are made up of members of the cast and of drama class students. Studded tires are permitted on the state’s highway system by statute from November 1 to April 30. Motorists are asked to remove their studded tires as soon as possible if not needed because of the damage to road surfaces where there is no ice or snow. Chili feed scheduled The Vernonia Country Store would like to invite everybody to a chili feed Friday, April 24 from 6-8 pm. Salad,z drink and door prizes are also included in this event being held at the Vernonia Senior Center. The cost for adults is $1.50 and for children under five it will be 75<t. The board elections for the Vernonia Country Store will be held at 8 pm. OBITUARIES IN LOVING MEMORY Of William Douglas Caldwell, infant son of Douglas and Vera Caldwell of Seaside, Oregon, nephew of Chris and Ruth Burkett of Vernonia. Died on Easter Sunday, memorial service held on Tuesday, April 21 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Portland. Surviving are many loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in Oregon and Washington who will dearly miss our “Little Professor”, now in the Everlasting arms of Christ. Chester E. Weed Chester E. Weed, second son of Oscar Weed, a native son of the Upper Nehalem Valley, died Easter Sunday. Weed, bom January 24,1912 on the place homesteaded by his grandfather, Judson Weed, in 1876 four miles south of Vernonia on Timber Road. His grandmother, Emma (Van Blaricom) Weed was a member of the second family in this part of the valley, who homesteaded here in 1874. Chester underwent his third open heart surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland on April 3. Complications kept him on the critical list until April 10 and therapy was begun but other complications arose Saturday resulting in his death. Survivors include his wife, Ruth (Urie) Weed of Myrtle Point; two sons, Robert Oscar Weed of Atlanta, Georgia and Roger Oren Weed of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Elza Weed of Bend, Oregon and a sister, Mildred Weed Evans of South Pasadena, California. There are also three grandchildren in Washington state, and his only remaining aunt, Lester Weed Gamer of Vernonia. A memorial service is planned for Thursday afternoon in Myrtle Point where Chester had lived for many years and had owned a gift shop and newsstand. STUDDED TIRE SEASONS ENDS H. Jean Bergerson H. Jean Bergerson, 50, a resident of Vernonia and very active in community activities for the past 25 years, died Thursday, April 16 at St. Vincents Hospital in Portland of cancer Funeral services were held Saturday, April 18, at the Christian Church in Vernonia with Rev. Russell Vinyard officiating. Concluding committal rites were at the Vernonia Memorial cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Fuiten Mortuary of Vernonia. Helen Jean Bergerson was born April 30, 1930 at Bend, Oregon, the daughter of Tom and Faye Clements Craig. She spent her early life and received her early education in Bend and then finished her high school education in Vernonia. She then moved to Hood River and worked for the Hood River Apple Growers Association for several years and was married there on August 20, 1950 to Ralph Bergerson. Mrs. Bergerson had been active in many community activities, having been a member and Past Matron of the Nehalem Chapter no. 153 Order of Eastern Star and she had also served on the Rainbow Girls Board of Advisors for many years. She was a member of the Vernonia Christian Church; the Vernonia Women’s Golf and the Vernonia Women’s Bowling Association and the Izaak Walton League of America. She was a great lover of the out-of-doors. Surviving is her husband, Ralph Bergerson, Vernonia; her mother, Faye Craig, Hood River; two children, Mrs. Steven (Kathryn) Razner, Foster City, Ca. and Craig Bergerson, Vernonia; a brother, Randall Craig, Bend, Oregon; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Carolann) Clarke, Hood River and a grandson, David Razner, Foster City. The family suggests contributions to the Cancer Fund or to the Vernonia Cemetery Beautification Fund. Reeding is Fundamente! scheduled for WGS Washington Grade School will hold its second annual series of Reading is Fundamental (RIF) distributions in the coming weeks. The purpose of RIF is to motivate students to read and to develop positive attitudes towards books by helping them start a collection of their own reading material. Each student from kindergarten to sixth grade will be able to choose one book of their own on the following dates; April 24, May 1, May 8. Parents are welcome to attend the distributions which are held in the Washington Grade School Library. The distribution schedule on April 24 will be as follows: 8:50-9:10 am 9:10-9:30 9:30-9:50 9:50-10:05 10:05-11:15 1:20-2:00 pm 2:10-2:30 Sixth Grade Fifth Grade Fourth Grade Kindergarten Lincoln Mist Third Grade Local matching funds for the Reading is Fundamental project are being raised by Book Fairs. The local contribution raised amounts to $184 and the federal contribution $552. LADIES GOLF CLUB NEWS The Ladies Golf Club will be holding a ‘President get acquainted night April 28 at 5:15 at the Vernonia Golf course. . There will be an Approach and Putt tournament—weather permitting. Buffet dinner will be served at a cost of $4, including beverage. Ladies are requested to bring just two clubs. For additional information call the golf course. 4—HERS WIN COUNTY MEDALS Twenty 4-H members received county medals in County Record Competition. In 4-H, members learn that good record keeping is an important part of being a successful homemaker, rancher, farmer or businessman. To help recognize the importance that records play in becoming a responsible and successful adult, several companies and associations sponsor medals to be given to 4-H’ers who compete in county record judging. In addition to winning a county medal, 4-H records may be selected for state competitioh where the member may win a trip to National 4-H Congress in Chicago or go on to compete nationally for $1000 scholarships; There are 220 of these $1000 scholarships provided each year for deserving 4-H teens. This year’s county winners include: Sandy Stewart, Shane Stewart, Becky Price, Sue Settje, Tami Zea, Janice Clark, Tracy Zea, Debi Carlson, Sheryl Prouty, Jackie Clark, Sheila Prouty, Renee Samples, Tami Anderson, Jim Appleby, Doug Knox, Fred Gibson, Dawn Smiley, Kelly Ryan, and Carmen Johnson. In addition to winning a county medal, the following members were selected to go to State: Renee Samples, Doug Knox, Tracy Zea, Janice Clark, Kelly Ryan, Jackie Clark, Debi Carlson; and Fred Gibson.
