If you, on the other hand, are one of the early birds, try sowing a later radish drop* They will be as good as the early crop, and free of those pesky root maggots that seem to attack certain root crops with such vigor. After tilling your plot several times, not only should you be deep enough, but as a side benefit the soil will be quite finely pulverized. Most of the heavy tillers will accomplish this nicely, leaving only a minimal amount of raking to be done. Also, this is the time to add manure or compost if you plan to do so. Make sure that any manure you add is well rotted or it will have a disastrous effect on your plants. As mentioned in an earlier article, good garden soil is about one*third each of sand, clay and humus. You will have a good garden crop if you add three to six inches of well rotted manure tilled in well If you can’t find manure, don’t worry, you’ll probably have a good garden anyway, and you will also have the rest of the year to locate some for next year! Also, you may add a variety of materials through the growing season to retard weeds, and to hold moisture. This is called mulching, and we’ll talk more about it later. After raking out the larger rocks and hard clay clods, you are now ready for planting, according to the directions on the seed packets. In our area, remember that usually the spring is quite cool. Keep this fact in mind when you read the instructions on the seed packets. Plant only those crops that do well in early spring and leave the rest until later. I have found that those crops planted later seem to catch up to the earlier planted ones, and also seem healthier for not having been forced to sit and shiver for two or three weeks. The same thanks to the rotary tiller, that is. For years each spring, it was my back breaking duty to spade the garden plot employing that most primitive of torture implements, the shovel. Although there are several tillers advertised each day in the Portland papers, I would use restraint in rushing right out to buy one. By far the most practical and the least expensive way to go, especially for the new gardener is to either have your ground tilled by someone who does that sort of thing each spring, or borrow or rent one to do the job. The average gardener has little use for a tiller after the garden plot is tilled in the spring, so why go to the expense and upkeep of owning one when you will probably use it only once a year? If you rent a tiller and expect to use it on ground that did not have a garden there last year, don’t expect it to have everything ready for planting with only one “pass’. This chore, depending on the condition of the ground and what’s growing on it, will take time. In an area that is currently in lawn, for example, several trips over will be necessary just to break through the sod. After this is accomplished, going will be much easier as you work down into the ground to a depth of approximately 8 to 10 inches. One more tip: if you are having your garden tilled, make sure it is tilled deep enough. Most folks who do custom tilling depend on steady customers (return business) and are just as concerned as you are in having it done right, but it doesn’t hurt to make sure. If you hit really hard clay at a shallower depth, you may have to accept it the first year, realizing that each year thereafter you have the opportunity to improve soil conditions. Hear in Vernonia, it is still not too late to plant “traditional” early crops such as radishes, lettuce and peas. Nursery seeds too deep. The usual rule is to plant seeds no deeper than 2 -3Ltimes their diameter. Carrot and lettuce seeds need not be buried at all, just sprinkle them on and tamp them down with the hoe. After planting it’s a good idea to “water in” your seeds by lightly spraying with a hose, with the nozzle set to a fine spray. Of course, if you are really lucky, about the time you finish planting a nice spring rain will begin;, a good omen signifying a bountiful harvest. SPRING SUNDAY REVIVAL The First Baptist Church announces it’s “Spring Sunday”, April 26. Actually that is the title of their theme for Revivial as they prepare to “Spring Forth” in their efforts to work for the furtherance of Christ’s Kingdom. Reverend Leo Senn will be the keynote speaker and services are set for Sunday through Wednesday with a church-wide potluck following the regular 11 am Sunday service. Reverend Senn is the pastor of the Baptist Church in Vancouver and has baptized 22 new members since October. “We are looking forward to some tremendous messages and special music during the Revival,” said Pastor John Cahill. “Brother Senn is being used by God in the northwest and we are honored to have him preach,” he said. The ‘Vernonia Mets’ softball team meets every Tuesday and Thursday, behind the high school track, from 6 to 7 pm, for slowpitch practice. On rainy days we’ll be inside the Washington Grade School gym. If you are interested in playing this summer, we play two games a week in a Forest Grove League. Our team uniforms are red and gold. OBLACKS VISIT Mr. and Mrs. Max Oblack and Larry were in Molalla Tuesday to attend the funeral of their sister-in- law and Aunt Violet Oblack. Also accompanying them was their daughter Maxine Shrum of Beaverton. Later that day they joined relatives and friends at a luncheon at the Andrew Oblack home in Molalla. EPISCOPAL SERVICE SET An Easter Communion service will be celebrated by the Rev. Lincoln Eng for the Episcopal community in Vernonia. The service will be at 2 pm on Sunday, April 26, 1981 at the Vernonia Christian Church. Local Episcopalians invite any interested persons -to attend the service.
