This should not be intrepreted to mean you must have exactly this mixture, rather you should have about this ratio. As stated before, gardening is not an exact science. Good gardens are raised every year in soils heavy in clay or light in sand and yes, even in the absence of all three! But, you will enjoy gardening more, and your garden will do better if you work toward this balance. One of the best materials that will compost down into humus in our area is rotted hay or straw. Quite often due to our unpredictible weather, a farmer will chop and bale hay only to see it ruined by rain before it can be hauled to cover. In most cases the farmer will be happy to give it to you just for the asking. Where is it? I notice it in piles or just laying around in fields every Fire guts Tronson home Last Saturday morning Richard Tronson came home to find his house, at 999 1st St., full of smoke and obviously on fire. Instead of calling the fire department first he apparently tried to enter the house through the front door. The living room burst into flame as the oxygen from the open door rushed into the room, forcing Tronson back out of the house. The first fire engines arrived on the scene at approximately 2:33 am and had the flames knocked down within minutes. Just as the fire was coming under control, and while firefighters were trying to push it into the rear of the house, Tronson entered the house through a rear window, according to witnesses. An onlooker alerted the police to Tronson’s presence in the building in time to remove him safely, but not before he was engulfed by the smoke being forced to the rear of the house by firefighters in the living room. Acording to ohè witness, Jo Hall, Tronson apparently stopped • - breathing and required emergency • resuscitation, performed by Charlotte Ziegler, in the ambulance at least once before leaving for the hospital. Although transported to Forest Grove Hospital by the Vernonia | Ambulance Association Tronson was held for several hours for observation and then released apparently none the worse for wear. According to fire officials the cause of the fire in the 40 year old structure was faulty wiring in an electric heater in the front room. Although actual fire damage was confined to the living room and kitchen, the rest of the structure suffered heat and smoke damage and is considered a total loss. Tommy Tronson and his wife were only able to rescue several sporting arms, a number of fishing rods and some glass brick-a-bracks from the ashes of the fire. Fire department officials pointed out that because a fire feeds on oxygen, opening doors or windows can be highly dangerous, even causing in some situations actual explosions. “It’s best to just call the fire department and let us handle it,” said Chief Lannie McDonald. “We’d also like to point out that the fire truck that O.J. Ziegler drives, Utility 458, is a mini-pumper and is not designed to fight anything larger than a small brush fire,” McDonald said. “Just because-this vehicle is often the first on the scene doesn’t mean it is safe to use its limited capabilities on a structure fire, especially a fully involved house,” he added. The loss of their house was the second half of a double blow dealt the Tronson’s last weekend, following right on the heels of the death of their father Bernie Tronson early Friday morning. » DR. W. If you find it early in the spring, don’t spread it until later in the summer. Applying it too early may keep the soil from drying and warming, causing an undue delay in working your garden up for planting. The best time for adding any soil conditioning material is in the fall. This allows plenty of time for decomposition which must use or “pull” nitrogen from the soil to complete the process. Of course, after the process is over, the nitrogen remains in the soil to be used by your plants during the next growing season, so it is not lost. TIP: It is not advisable to plant potatoes in soil where lime or wood ashes have been added, as alkaline soil encourages a fungus called scab.
