Soil is not dirt and it really isn’t dirty, either. Gardeners refer to their hands and clothes as “soiled”, rather than dirty. Soil is actually the top few inches of the surface of your garden, the place where the magic of gardening occurs. * Ideally, “soil” should consist of three basic ingredients in somewhat equal proportions. These are sand, clay and humus. Each is very important to the success of your garden. ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH His Excellency, Cornelius M. Power D.D., Archbishop of western Oregon will visit St. Mary Catholic Church on Holy Thursday, April 16 for the celebration of Holy Mass at 7:30 pm. A potluck dinner'honoring Archbishop Power will be held before this service, at 6 pm, at the Parish Hall. Scripture readings at Holy Thursday Mass will focus on the Last Supper and will open an intensive three day period of reflection, devotion and preparation to celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord on Easter Sunday. Good Friday devotions will include the Way of the Cross, Sermon and Holy Communion from 2 pm to 3 pm with confessions from 3 pm to 4 pm. Evening service at 7:30 will begin with celebration of our Lord’s Passion, Liturgy of the Word, Holy Communion and then close with the veneration of the Cross. Holy Saturday confessions will be held from 11 am to 12. Easter Sunday celebrations begin at 10 am with the joyful Service of Light procession into the church for the Liturgy of the Word and the Eucharistic Celebration of the Resurrection of Our Lord. The pastor, Father Jerome Schmitz, will be at Our Lady of the Woods, Birkenfeld on Holy Saturday at 4:30 to hear confessions. He will celebrate the Easter Vigil Mass there at 5 pm. Sand provides necessary drainage in the garden, allowing the soil to wariii up quickly after watering or a rain shower. It also allows you to till your garden earlier in the spring. Too much sand, however, will not hold as much moisture as you may need, requiring more frequent waterings. Nutrients will also ‘leech’ out faster. Clay is the opposite of sand. It tends to hold too much water for too long and when it does dry out it becomes very hard. It is the basic material in the manufacture of bricks. Most soil here in Vernonia is “heavy”, having a large amount of clay in it. As far as I am concerned, clay is the most difficult challenge we face in our gardens in Vernonia. If holds moisture too late in the spring and when you try to till if too soon it FOURSQUARE HAPPENINGS by Sandy Welch The men of Vernonia Foursquare will hold their monthly prayer breakfast Saturday, April 18 at 8 am in the Church Fellowship Hall. A continental breakfast will be offered, followed by sharing and a time of prayer. The breakfast and prayer time is open to any man who would like to join them. Saturday evening, from 7 pm-9 pm the church will enjoy a gym night in the high school gym. Keen competition and an evening of great fun was enjoyed by all ages at the last gym night which had several spirited volleybajl games. Anyone desiring to join the group is welcomed. To celebrate the victory of our Risen Lord, a beautiful Easter Worship Service is planned at If am, April 19 Following the service, a potluck dinner will be held in the fellowship hall. If you try to spade it too soon, it will dry so hard that nothing will break it down for planting. Roots have a difficult time as well, often resulting in less than desirable growth. Over the years I have spread many pickup loads of sand and gravel on my garden in an effort to break up the clay. All that usually happened was the the whole garden would set up like concrete! Some say lime will help break clay down, giving some elaborate scientific process to support the theory. I remain unconvinced, although lime is very important for other reasons. There is only one material that will break down clay. It is HUMUS! Humus is decayed (or nearly decayed) organic matter. Humus, ^^^^***^* ANNOUNCEMENT A community Good Friday Service is scheduled for Friday, Apijil 17 at 7 pm in the grade school gym. The Rev. Jack Lindsley will be speaking at this- service. . The public is invited to attend. EPISCOPAL EASTER SERVICES There will be a Festival Eucharist Celebration Easter, Sunday morning at 9 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Birkenfeld. The Reverend Wallace Bradley, Priest in charge, cordially invites Vernonia area Episcopalians and their families to worship in this country church setting. Gardening becomes a joy as you scoop up a handful of freshly tilled soil, rich in humus, and let it fall between your fingers. Old time gardeners had a name for this condition. They called it “tilth”. The AAAAAAAAAAAAAA EASTER SERVICES SET The Vernonia Ministerial Association has planned the following community Easter services: Good Friday Service, Sunrise Service and the Easter Breakfast, The Good Friday Service will be held in the grade school gymnasium Friday, April 17, beginning at 7 pm. Pastor Jack Lindsley, from the Foursquare Church will conduct this service. The Easter Sunrise Service, beginning at 6:30 am at the Vernonia Cemetery, will commemorate the day of our risen Lord. The service, which will be on Easter morning, April 19, will be led by Pastor John Cahill, of the Vernonia Bible Church. Following the Sunrise Service, a community Easter Breakfast will be served at the Evangelical Church. The menu will be sausage, scrambled eggs and a choice of homemade doughnuts, cinnamon rolls or bran muffins and also your choice of coffee, tea, or milk.
