Thursday February 26,1981 Page 2 — Vernonia Freedom NOTICE Wrestling fans see no home town spirit To the Editor: Where has our spirit gone? This individual one-on-one opponent sport that requires self discipline and body weight control deserves more support from the school and the town, especially when the District Wrestling Tournament is held in our home town. Where has our spirit gone? Where were you February 21 when the Vernonia wrestling team needed to hear your cheers of support? Each team member has put in hours of late practice. This sport requires the most individual self control of disappointment when a match loss occurs. No other sport requires so much of one individual alone. The one-on-one struggle to win on that mat. When you lose as a team, you lose together. When you lose as a wrestler, you lose alone. But through a win or a loss they gain friends from all the schools because of the mutual respect of the sport. Let’s change our attitude. Let’s support this wrestling team that now will have three wrestlers going to the State Championships. Three other team members placed third in the district on Saturday. Let’s give them the support they need and deserve. Let’s develop a grade school wrestling program to put our school in better competition in the district. We are proud of our wrestling team which placed third in the District. Let’s find that spirit and support this wrestling team. A big thank you to those Vernonia people who came and gave support. St. Helens Reader asks for VHS athletic info MAKE YOURSELF WOOLLY ROTHCO ORIGINAL To the Editor: As an ex-Nehalem Valley resident and graduate of Vernonia High School, I like to keep up with the progress of the VHS athletic teams. It would seem that the hometown newspaper would report on various athletic events for the sake of those who cannot attend and for out-of- towners like myself. But each week when the paper arrives, I find either no sports news, or incomplete sports reporting by the Timberline staff. The last three editions of the Freedom have contained no sports news. The January 29th edition contained a picture of the varsity basketball game with Lutheran. The caption under the picture does not say who won the game. It sure would be nice to know. In this same issue, an article about coach Curtis does not even mention how many games the team has won and lost for the season. I have had more success in finding scores to VHS basketball games in the Oregonian and Statesman- Journal newspapers. Why can’t we have more responsible sports journalism from the Freedom and Timberline staff? William C. Would you feel so inclined to do such a story on our Vernonia Clinic down the street where Dr. Earl Buchanan and I are continually, and have continually for the last five years been providing what we hope will be considered by our local residents as the “Best dental and visual health care anywhere”. We could use the publicity, as many local residents have erroneously assumed we are no longer here because the Maple Street Clinic is no longer here. In addition, I would like to somehow make local residents aware that in an effort to provide more efficient and upgraded dental care we now have a certified dental hygienist in the office on Fridays. Thompson, D.M.D. A workshop for prospective contestants in the Make It Yourself With Wool contest, which is sponsored by the nation’s wool growers to promote home sewing with wool by young persons age 10- 24, will be held Saturday, February 28, from 10 am to noon at the Scholls home of the district director, Mrs. Louis Hesse. The workshop will include information about the contest, fabric and pattern selection, wool sewing and pressing techniques, includihg interfacings, linings, buttonholes, etc. Prospective contestants with then- mother and/or teacher are encouraged to attend. Social Security QUESTION: My disabled son, who gets supplemental security income, is able to perform very simple tasks in a sheltered workshop where he earns a little moneys Do I have to report his earnings to social security? \ ANSWER: Yes, all pay received in a sheltered workshop is considered to be earned income and must be reported. The first $65 a month of earned income plus one half of the earned income over $65 is not counted in figuring SSI payment amounts.
