Lucene Hansen 429-2355 JEWELL NEWS Jewell students initiated into National Honor Society by Ruth Nogle - \ Seven Jewell students were initiated into the National Honor Society recently. Carol Adamson, daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Adamson; Darin Berg, son of Edgar Berg; Joan Layman, daughter of Evelyn Weitz; James Reeher, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Reeher; Ward Vandehey, son of the Larry Vandeheys and Dawn Smith, daughter of the Harvey Smiths were the honorees. A wedding reception honoring newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Scott Fraser will be held at the Jewell Grange on Saturday, February 14. The young couple, Scott, son of Terry and Julie Fraser and Roberta Sell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Sell, will be married at the Emanuel Episcopal Church at 2 pm with the open reception immediately following at the Grange Hall. Scott is serving in the US Air Force and has recently been promoted to airman and assigned to McChord Air Force Base, Washington. Mrs. Thelma Kennedy and Mrs. Vera Soderback are directing the oil painting classes on Wednesdays at the Jewell School. The class had formerly been in conjunction with Clatsop Community College. The ladies urge anyone interested to come out and meet with them from 1:30 to 4:30 pm. Have you sent Judy Layman your recipes? Remember, she is compiling a cookbook from recipes from the Valley’s kitchens. Sales from the book will be used for a memorial fund at the school. Send them to her in pare, of the school. Committal services followed with interment held at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery. Artemus Jx’on DeHart was, born October 24. 1892 at Weis Bluff. Texas, the son of .John D. and Isaura E. Claude DeHart. Asa young man he started working in a machine shop. He later went to work for the Long Bell Lumber Co. at Longville, La. as a saw filer. He then went to work for the Gulf Lumber Co. at Fullerton. La.. Mr. DeHart was united in marriage July 19. 1914 to Maggie May Cooley at Singer. La. The family lived at Fullerton for 13 years before moving to Weed, Ca. where he went to work for the Long Bell Lumber Co. living there until moving to Vernonia in 1928 at which time he went to work for the Oregon American Lumber Co. He was the head saw filer there. In 1934 he moved to Hines, Or., where he worked for the Edward G. Hines Lumber Co. working there forvtwo years and then returning to the Oregon American Lumber Co. in Vernonia where worked until the mill closed in 1957. Mr. DeHart died Sunday, February 1, at his home in Vernonia following an extended illness. He is survived by his wife. Maggie, of Vernonia: nine children: Mrs. Percy (Otha) Ekegren, Long Beach. Ca.: Thurman DeHart, Vernonia; Artemus Leon DeHart, Jr.. St. Helens. Or.: Mitchell DeHart. Seattle. Washington: Mrs. Ervin (Elizabeth) Meier, Tacoma, Wa.; Mrs. Dick (Dorothy) O’Neal, Gering, Neb.: Lester DeHart. Sheridan. Or,: Tempie, Nance. Vernonia: John DeHart. Portland.
