Page 8— Vernonia Freedom Thursday A u g u st 21,1980 VHS class of '50 holds reunion at Neskowin There were 24 graduates from the VHS class of 1950 present for their 30 year reunion, held at Neskowin Lodge. The get- together included a banquet Saturday, July 19th with speeches of reminiscence, movies of previous reunions, and a good tim e of fellowship and renewing friendships, and oh yes, golfing. Those in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. John Brown, Oregon City; Mr. and Mrs. Owen Graham, (Elsie Spofford), Gresham; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Chalmers, Gresham; Mr. Gene Wall, Portland; Mr. and Mrs. Don Foerster, Cornelius. Mrs. Don Hanon (Barbara Brown), Juneau, Alaska; Mr. and Mrs. John Borton, Salem; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Burnham, Portland; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Gates (Joyce Webb), Cool, California; Mr. and Mrs. Loren Weidman, Campbell, California. Ash Sunday Social Security Kathy Bruers seen down under with Kangaroo 2 Local students spend winter in Australia This past Sunday, August 17 th, Kathy Bruers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Bruers, returned to Vernonia after spending the summer as a Lions Club International exchange student in Australia. Flying time to Australia is 24 hours. The plane stops in Los Angeles, Hawaii, Auckland, New Zealand, and finally Sydney, A ustralia. There were 56 exchange students traveling together, either to New Zealand or Australia. 18 of these were from Oregon, two from Vernonia, Kathy Bruers and David Jackson. Because Australia is south of the equator the seasons are reversed. It was winter in Australia. The nights were really cold, but the days would warm up to a heavy sweater weather. There is a sixteen hour time difference between Vernonia and where Kathy stayed. The first town Kathy stayed in was a town the size of Vernonia. It was also a lumber town high up in the hills. Kathy had the privilege of staying with eight different host families during her time inAustralia. Each family treated her to many sight seeing trips and fun times. She stayed with a Forest Rangers family, a school teacher, a retired couple, a farmer-rancher, the owners of a general store, a mail route carrier, a policeman and the owners of a general store in a town of about 1000. While she was there she attended school and enjoyed going to several different churches with her host families. Kathy enjoyed this trip immensely. It was very educational and she has made many friends w ith whom she intends to correspond, both here in the USA and in Australia. Kathy would like to thank the Vernonia Lions Club for sponsoring her on this wonderful learning experience. QUESTION: Some friends and I were talking about social security the other day. Most of us feel that it’s really a good investment. Couldn’t we do better with private insurance or a pension plan? ANSWER: Social security'provides a package of protection — disability, survivors, retirement, and health insurance — that cannot be duplicated at a comparable cost. Also, social security has advantages which are not always found in private insurance or pension plans. For example, social security benefits are tax-free and increase automatically each year with the cost-of- living. Social security is not meant to replace all earnings lost because of retirement, disability, or death. It’s a basic level of income to build on with individual savings, investments, or other insurance. by Don Bruers She did it this time. Mt. St. Helens has just made a big ash hole of herself, and consequently broke off all relations with her boyfriends; Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood. She told Mt. Hood, “I lava you, I lava you.” He told her, “I don’t want anything to do with you anymore, because you forgot to take your Earth Control Pills.” She did not file an Environmental Impact Statement (what she had on the top of her mind to do) and therefore violated the Federal Pollution Standards. Her penalty for this gross violation will be, never to erupt again before filing an Environmental Impact Statement. Because of her carelessness, violent action and exposure, she has a bad case of the flu. She has a high temperature, vomits with much force, has a runny nose, and coughs all the time. May she sleep in peace, amen! H ey!
