This was an excellent tournament with sixteen teams invited. After a scary first game in which the women were down 16-3 after two and a half innings, they came back to win 17-16. The IP women played excellent softball to place third in the tournament. The team that defeated IP finished first and second in the tourney. Marsha Hager, Dana Hiveley and Dolly Keenon were selected to the All-star team . Other women who played were Marilyn Landers, Judy Eide, Dawn B ernardi, Teresa Sharar, Liz Cook, Debbie Sharar, Connie McPhee, Brenda Wuest, Barbara Fults and Lorie Stacy. This was the final action of the season for the women who finished the season with an over all record of 16-9. An excellent record for their first season. IP finishes 3rd in league play The International Paper softball team, composed of women from Vernonia, recently completed their first season of play. The women played in the Forest Grove League and finished third out of nine teams. With a record of eleven wins and five losses, the women played very well and learned a lot. Those players who finished the season were Judy Eide, Dana Hively, Marsha Hager, Liz Cook, Sandi Dreyer, Marilyn Landers, Dolly Keenon, Teresa Sharar, Dawn Bemardi, Connie McPhee, Pam Weller, Chris Miller, and Peggy Pitt. Dana was selected to the first All-Star team, with Marsha and Connie chosen to the second team. Local teacher attends political workshop Bellingham , W ash -- The 1980 Presidential election took a new meaning for about 30 participants in Western . Washington University’s workshop on Presidential Politics, held here August 4- 8. One of those participating in the workshop was Gary Curtis, a teacher at Vernonia H igh School in Vernonia, Oregon. The workshop is designed to acquaint students with the presidential election process, enable them to analyze events associated with the campaign and assess the significance of th e election on American politics. Participants heard guest speakers, Tim Douglas, delegate to the 1976 Democratic Convention, and Mark Nelson, delegate to the 1976 Republican Convention. , With insights of American politics gained in the first three days of the workshop, students broke into campaign camps for Reagan, Carter and Anderson. The final two days were spent completing stra teg ies to elect their resp ective candidates. E veryth in g from p osition papers, electoral college predictions for each state and preparation of television commercials for their candidate and against the other two were required from each group. Students also drafted stands for their candidates on issues such as the ERA, federal funding of abortions, the draft and an issue of their choice which they believed would help elect their man. After strategy sessions behind closed doors for two days, the armed camps met the final day to confront their opponents. But as seems to be the case in today’s real political race, this early test was too d ose to call. Norm an L. Its supervisor, Bill Edwards, will arrive in Vernonia on September 8 and school will begin soon after. The study load approved by the School Board is an accredited Home Study course operated by th e General Conference in W ashington, D.C. Presently the children will meet in a newly furnished single room on the Seibert’s farm property. But with future growth, the plan is to build a regular schoolhouse. A t such a time it is likely that additional certified teachers will be hired who will then teach their own curriculum.
