Thursday, February 21,1980 Vernonia Freedom—Page 5 School budget hearing has small turnout The hearing on the Vernonia School district budget was held Feb. 14 and there was a ,very small turnout with little response. . Fred Klinger, a Vernonia High School teacher was present to ask where the money for salaries would come from if the negotiated contracts w ere; settled for more than the estimated amount put in the budget for salaries. , Mr- Proehl stated that there were no plans at the present and it would be a board decision on what programs • to decrease if the contracts were more than the budget amounts. There, were no other commments concerning the budget. O b itU d F V 7 E thyl Alberta Trombley Ethyl Trombley, well khow person about downtown Vernonia for many* years, died Feb. 1, at the Columbia District Hospital in /Sfe. Helens. Mrs. Troiftbley was living at 907 Weed Ave. in Vernonia and was bom June 18, 1905 in Portland, OR. She had lived her whole life in Oregon. Her brother Carl Cedarquist of Tigard, had arranged for private inturnment services in the Violet Room at Riverview A'bbdy- Mausoleum i n .. Portland. The services were on Feb. 4th. Snowman was nearS ft- t all giant Notes On Folks Cory & Capitol H ill by Dixie Webber Sandy and Jeff Hartzell returned to Vernonia last Saturday night Feb. 9 after they had left two years ago. Sandy just gave birth to their baby, Feb. 17, in Forest Grove Hospital. They now have a 71b. 6 */2 oz. baby boy. Sandy was bom in Florence, Oregon and was raised here. She went to school in Vernonia. Jeff was bom in Bakersfield and raised in Taft, California. They are hereto stay, Jeff is looking for work and planing to JiVe in Vernonia area. Jeff will try anything in a way jo? a job th at’s available^“ I have a b ig responsibility,” says Jeff. Other Notes ' Fred Mangot just came back from the Phillippines. He was, in Manilla and Bilibo. This was the first time in 52 years he ■ had been back to his home in the Phillipines. He said he was glad- -to get back to , Vernonia again, that there is nothing like the United States and he’s proud of it. His wife Jenny would like to thank all her neighbors for being so good to her and helping her while Fred was gone. E thel M cRobert of F orest Grove recently spent two weeks visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Bill and Reatha Hom of Vernonia, While in Vernonia, Mrs. Hom’s neighbor, Faye Davis had a birthday and a few ladies gathered to celebrate with her and share a birthday cake baked by Ida Richards. Mrs. McRobert was included, but as a surprise to her; however* Ethel and Faye rather surprised the ladies by announcing that they had known each other many years, as they were classmates in their first grade at the Gales Creek Grade School. Each were celebrating their 81st year and it had been many years since they had been together. All present enjoyed the two birthdays. Those attending were Ida Richards, Nora Keith, Anna Braun, Violet Roberts, Isabelle Culbertson, Reatha Hom and Mathilde Bergerson. Tops has baggy dress parade / “B? ggy Dress Parade" highlighted the Feb. 7 meeting of Vernonia TOPS, Several members wore their baggy before clothing and told how long they had been in TOPS and how much weight they had lost. Then they removed the baggy dresses to show the now dress. Weekly best loser for Jan. 24 was Mary Naylor, 6 pounds and-HOPS Ilene Grady: for Feb. 7 Pat Seibert, i pound and KOPS Sue Robertson; for Feb. 13 new member Carmen Vigil, 6 pounds and KOPS Sue Robertson, January , awards were presented to $he following Stork, Betty Tronson. Division 1, Nellie Anderson; Division 3, Janett Smiley; Division 4, Rosey Schnabel; Division 5, Jeanette Searles. Charms were presented to Penny Port for a 30 pound loss and for reaching her goal which she did on Jan., 31. Congratulations- Penny! Perfect Attendance charms were won by Ilene Grady, Vonney Gfray, Pay Ray, Jan ett Smiley, Jeanette Searles, Sue Robertson, P at Seibert and B etty Tronson. The Monthly Best Loser trophy was presented to Mary Naylor for her 7% '■ pound loss. The 1980 officers for Mt. H eart Rebehah Lodge 243 were installed on the night of Jan. 24. Installing officer, Reatha Hom, District Deputy President was assisted by Irene Minger as Deputy Warden, Others on the intalling were Louise Hammett, Ella Cline and Edna Linn and Faye Davies. Officers for the year are Noble Grand, Isabelle Anderegg Vice Grand, Charolette Mason; Recording Secretary R eatha Hom; Chaplain, Jackie Atkins, Left & Right support to the NG Faye Davies and Ella Cline; Left and Right support to the UG are Mathilde Bergerson and Edna Linn. Conductor, Eunice Lovey and Outside Guardian, Albert Tardy, Officers that were absent will be installed later. Hazel Bergerson Roberson had her 25 year jewel given to Gertrude Scholack who has fiUed the "Noble Guard claw for three consecutive years.
