Recently well known local environmentalist, Pon Willard, has been distributing a survey sheet concerning the use of the controversial herbicides 2,4,5,—T and 2,4,5-^TP. Don says this is in response to the planned aerial spraying of the herbicide 2,4,5—T announced by Allen Kuest of Timber Rt. Don says the survey is put out by the Columbia County Environmental Council and that he is distributing it to his friends and neighbors in order to get an idea of the feelings about the upcoming spraying; This is the first Use of the herbicide 2,4,5—T in Columbia County since the recent ruling by the Oregon Board of Forestry. . Below is a section from the survey by the Columbia Environmental Council that gives the piles for spraying as-set forth by the Oregon Board of Forestry. In September, 1978, the Oregon Board of Forestry adopted new rules for the use of herbicides, 2,4,5—T and 2,4,5—TP (Silvex) on private and state forest lands in Oregon. ' 1. Users of 2,4,5—T or Silvex must maintain a 200 foot buffer strip around Class I streams or areas of open water. . They must also maintain a 500 foot buffer strip around inhabited dwellings unless written permission is received from'the resident. (Class I streams are those from which people get drinking water) 2. Landowners aerially applying 2,4,5—T or Silvex must make every reasonable effort to notify contiguous landowners and residents, and downstream water users who have official water rights within one-half mile of the intended spray area, at least \fifteen days prior to the spray application. Notification must be by registered letter and or direct personal communication and by advertising in the local newspaper. 3. Boundaries of an aerial spray area must be posted by the landowner with a sign provided by the State Forester at all points of regular access.at least five days prior to spray. Posting must remain at leasat fifteen days after spraying is completed. 4. Where road closure is feasible, roads leading into of next to a spray area must be closed temporarily to public traffic during spraying. Where road closures are not practical, sprayer must leave a buffer zone of at least one swath width (roughly 60 feet) bn each side of all regularly travelled public roads. 5. Landowners are responsible, for determining whether or not chemicals they apply to forest lands are contaminating streams or other bodies of water. This is an old rule that may not be ’ obeyed or enforced. Chemicals are to be applied only in accordance with certain temperature, humidity, wind speed and other factors specified by the State Forester. Chemicals shall not be applied: a. When winds exceed 5 m.p,h. ; b. When temperatures exceed 70 degrees F. c. When humidity is less that 50 percent. d. During snow, hail, or rain storms, . i e. When snow or ice covers target vegetation. > f. During foggy weather. g. When air turbulence is so great that it seriously affects the normal spray pattern. The, meeting, conducted by the OregOiWepW^ Education, serves to acquaint staff and parents of the state and federal guidelines. Knowledge of these regulations ' allows the local school districts to plan a district program for the use of the federally allocated funds. Title I funds in the Vernonia district are used to ; run the skill centers in basic education at both Vernonia High School and Washington Grade School. During the second nine weeks period there were no 7th or 8th graders receiving Principal’s Honors. Those students receiving High Honors, with a grade point average of 3.50—3.99 included: Leora Battrick, Ross Bellingham, Chafes DuVall, Monica Hogan, Wendy Ray, Junior Berge, Karen Pitt, KristiReinsch, Sonia Aldrich, Jewel Shetler. Those students receiving Honors with a grade point average of 3.25—3.49 were: Jimmie Deakin, Shana Bodenhamer, Bruce Carter, Shelly Crabtree, Larary Rider, Otis Fuller, Becky Nice, Heather Remsen, Eric Wilcoxsen, Cynthia Reiken, David Kleinman, Deborah Sharar, Christina Skinner. Avery Shirley Melodrama needs piano player Lions Club wives night The Vernonia Lions Club members entertained their wives at a Ladies Night on Tuesday, February 13, at the Eagle Office cafe. The ladies were presented carnations by President Bob Cadwallader and dessert was a special cake baked by Mrs. Cadwallader. Lion Rev. Russ Vinyard addressed the group on the topic of marriage.
