Sponsored by VFW Post 4211, of Willamina. This pro gram is for the young boys ages eight through 18 who are interes ted in boxing. It is not to teach them to fight, but to teach them self-defense, sportsmanship, meet boys from other cities, make friends from other areas, and I think mostly to give them something to do with spare time and keep them off the streets. For a program of this kind you Campgrounds open now The following campgrounds on the Siyslaw National Forest will be open during spring vacation: Alder Dunes (wood available), Big Creek, Bluebill Lake, Can al Creek, Castle Rock, South loop of North Eel Creek, Hebo Lake, Neskowin Creek, North Creek, Rocky Bend, Schooner Creek, Siltcoos (Driftwood and Lodge pole will be open), Slide, Tah- kenitch, Tenmile, Tillicum Beach (2 loops will be open, some wood available on the beach), andTyee. At this time the only charge system in effect will be at i j l - licum Beach. All water systems will be turned on. Archie Knowles campground will be open April “2 with no charge. While finishing in third place in a field' of three, the Willamina entry in the Krazy Days egg eating contest held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night at the Lancaster Mall in Salem proved their spunk in the event. The six man team, consisting of Ed Ashman, Art Goodman, Kelly Bunn, Terry Bass, Carl Tucker and Mike McCurry ate a total of 113 eggs in an hour, they were right behind the Sprague High School team. port these young boys at their boxing shows when they are put on. Each year we need new boys to start so we can continue this program. Most of all we need the parents help and the support Of the friends of these young boys to help them. Our many many thanks to these people. need equipment' to work with. At the very beginning and through, our past two yqars, this equip ment and help has been donated and given by the graciousness of all the businesses, industries and individuals of our Willamina, Sheridan, and Grand Ronde area. Once again our very deepest thanks go to these people. The club joined the Oregon Ama teur Athletic Union as soon as we started. Throughout the year there are seven statewide tourn aments held; all sanctioned by the AAU. All .the boxing shows put oncby the various clubs are also sanctioned by the AAU. The rules are set by the AAU. These are nationwide. Our boys go by the same rules they use in the Olympics. That makes our boys the same as the big boys only a lot smaller in size. (A lot of the 50 and 60 pounders feels as big too. Who knows one might be a world champ, one day. This is where they get their start.) The boys have taken part in every tournament and we have a lot of champions. They have taken special awards such as several Golden boy, and Team championships. Some of the boys have repeated their cham- - pionship for two years. In the past two years, the V.F.W. club has hosted the State Silver Glove Tournament at Willamina. This is an annual affair. This is a tournament for boys from one to ten fights. This year we had some 110 boys from al) over Oregon. We have put «on benefit shows for groups and individuals for our areas So we try to help others as well as helping the boys. NOTICE OF BUDGET HEARING | "BUSINESS LARGE OR SMALL JIM DOES IT ALL" I Willamina was 22-2 on the sea- Bush of Sheridan, Robert Gon zalez of Willamina, and Nicky Ridenour of Grand Ronde. Bill Sabey, Jack Bush and Coach Dick Mishler and wife were the root ing section for the boys. Five of the VFW boxers went to Eugene on Saturday, March 10 for a show with the Eugene Boys Club. All five returned with a trophy, having won all five fights. For one boy it was his first trophy In three fights. Making the trip were Jackie Sabey, Jimmy Sabey, Curtis son, suffering losses to Stayton and Dayton. Barnes was named to the first team in the AA bracket. The team was selected by a vote of selected coaches and sports writers. Barnes was also a unanimous selection for the Yawama League all-star team. Barnes was also on the first team of this all- star team. Joining Barnes on the all-star team was Duane Rich of Willamina. Rich was named ’ to the second team. Barnes was the Yawama League scoring champion and averaged 22 points per game. Last year Barnes set a new one- game scoring record in the Bull dogs’ first game in the state tournament and was named to the all-tournament squad. The tournament began on Tues day, but the Bulldogs will not see any action until Wednesday night when they will meet Scapoose, the number two team from the Cowapa League at 7:30. Boxers win in Eugene Shriners choose Propes for East-West game The Shriners Club of Eastern Oregon, sponsoring the Shriners Hospital Oregon East-West All Star Football game August 18 at Baker, Oregon have notified Mike Propes of Willamina of his selection to play in the 21st annual game. Mike has received recognition from his coaches during the years, both in high school and at Sports Acres Football Camp. He received special ^awards from camp during thé three ses sions he attended and was named Most Inspirational player while there during the ‘72 summer session. A , He was picked on all four of the Oregonian and Joufnal teams on defensive and offensive posi tions either placing on the first or second team. He was named Lineman of the Year for Willa mina by his teammates. He has been offéred scholar ships from several colleges and will be attending Oregon State this fall. Mike said he feels that these honors to him have come from much patience and a lot of train ing by his coaches over the years, but most of the credit goes to the rest of the team who really made it all possible. He said he will try to be a credit to them , as the Willamina representative.
