Instead it’s the first names of two couples out in Grand Ronde who run Spec’s Market. Irepe and Rod Haak and Ray and Dorene Holmsten own and operate the combined store, gas station and used car lot in Grand Ronde. Originally from Freemont, California, they became interested in the area when Rod’s brother moved here a few years ago. During their vacation that fall the Haak’s came up to Oregon to see him. While here, they became captivated by the area and decided they just had to move here. One evening while they were visiting with the Holmstens they were talking about the area and the two couples decided to try and move here. They wrote for inf ormatiorzon die area and among places they were informed of was Spec’s Market. They ended up buying the store. In fact they bought it from Charlie Jordan, mayor of Sheridan. ‘‘Yeah if it wouldn’t have been for Charlie we’d still be down in California with all the pollution, people, cars, drugs and fast living,” they said with no apparent'regrets on making the move. Before coming to Grand Ronde the Haaks had worked for a large chain store in California. When asked how the market got its name they said that’s what it was called when they bought it and as far as they know that’s what it’s been called since it was built ‘‘and it’s been here for 25 years.” They ,are also authorized dealers for metal detectors and have been selling them for the last year. Their used car lot has been open for about six months. Rod is an avid fisherman (Irene claims that if he doesn’t have a gas pump is his hand he has a fishing pole). Irene on the other hand likes to knit, go to the beach and hunt for rocks. Roy calls himself a ‘‘frustrated fireman and'treasure hunter.” He also collects old guns. Dorene stays busy chasing her St. Bernard around. She said he drinks about a gallon and a half of water a day, of which about half he spills down the front of him.
