On the train trip front Dublin to
B elfast you pass across the border
from Eire (pronounced A Y ruh) into
Northern Ireland, th e latter a part
of Great Britain, and the custom s

foods and oth er n ecessities, and all
baggage is exam ined by the Eireann

North Ireland, w here you are exam ­
ined again. Since foodstuffs and

"spirits" (w h isk ey, etc.) are less e x ­
pensive in Eire than across the bor­
der, there is a strong tem ptation a-
tu o tig the travellers to sm uggle goods
across.
On our train there w ere many
Iiish laborers enroute to work on
fa im s in Scotland, w here labor is
short, and all of these men carried
a box. At the border, the South Ire­
land au th orities took from them
hundreds of pounds of butter, eggs
and o th er foodstuffs the men were
carrying to Scotland, where they an­
ticipated less available food.

for this w as principally religiou s, for

per cent C atholc, w hile in the north
the predom inant religion is P rotes­
tant, principally P resbyterian.
