A record for Scranton, Pa., was established recently when the ISranton Drygoods Company car ried more than 37 pages of ad vertising in the three daily news papers in connection with a one- day sale. The management of }the store reported after th« sale that all business records for a day were shattered. Special traffic policemen had to he used to handle the crowds that flocked lo the store. An appl’caton of electricity whereby fish are literally "shocked” away and saved from destruction by the turbine wheels of hydroelectric plants has recently been developed in Oregon. The device is made up of two parallel rows of electrodes suspended from a wooden frame- mg down stairs than are killed and injured in fires. "The ma jority of street accidents are caused by little acts of thought lessness, rather than drunkeness or other violation of the law in driving automobiles.” A care- fuli analysis of sheet and high way accidents shows that .about 15 per cent are caused by back ing carelessly to get parking spaces. Failure to get under proper control when approaching street intersections causes an other 15 per cent. Following too close behind a vehicle to abow proper brakeing distance ac counts for 12 per cent of ac cidents. Improper sign a I i n g causes 10 per cent, and skidding eight per cent. Miscellaneous small acts of neglect cause 30 per cent while drunkeness and other violations of the law cause only 10 per cent of accidents — the water and one near the bot- — tom. Instead of passing new laws and regulations to en croach upon the rights and privi leges of law-abiding citizens, it passed the Baumes law in 1926, Which automatically sentenc«-a life imprisonment. Naturally, there have been objections to this law because it has "teeth” in it, but if crime is to be re duced the number of criminals and potential criminals must also be reduced. There is no excuse for a man committing four crimes of a character to involve a pcni- tentairy sentence. Why should I he public be subjected to the danger of meeting habitual crim inals? New York has taken a step in the right direction. Il should be upheld in its program to catch the crook, keep him caught, hand him a fitting sen tence, and see that he serves it. Sentimental individuals claim «hat severe punishment noes not deter the ciiminal, but makes him hate society. This appar ently lias not been the ease in New York. The certainty of life imprisonment for a fourth felony has stayed the hand of hardened criminal. He thinks before sentencing himself under such a law. What New York has done'the rest of the country must do if it actually desires to overcome the criminal elements: make crime not only unprofitable but highly inconvenient and dangeious fo the perpetrator. 1 Ninety per cent of all indust rial, home, street and highway, accidents are from trivial causes. Major violations of the law and spectacular acts of criminal neg ligence produce but a small frac tion of the total number of deaths arid injuries that occur annually,” declared Marcus A. Dow, eminent safety engineer. "Boards left lying on factory floors with nails sticking up in them cause more serious injuries than boiler explosions.
