Bill Thompson, Brookings P ost m aster, has announced his resig nation from the Post Office, to accept a position w ith N orthern School Supply, whose m ain office is in Portland. Thom pson's wife, Jean, will stay in Brookings until the end of the cu rren t school year. She is a fourth r r ide teache. . Brookings-Harbor ele m e n t a r y school. Very active in com m unity af fairs, Thompson was the chairm an of the Brookings-Harbor school board, a director of the Brookings Q uarterback Club, he was orgam ze • and director of the Civil De fense group here. He is a m em ber of the C ham ber of Comerce, Elks, and Lions clubs, and last y ear did th e refereeing for the high school basketball games. Thompson came to Brookings in 1951 as a |>artncr in a private surveying firm, and then in 1953 he tau g h t at the Brookings high school. He becam e P ostm aster in 1954. , Courthouse Work Hei '-khs Open Still Stopped Gold Beech St„ e Work has not started on the C urry County Court House, now partially finished at Gold Beach. Work stopped several weeks ago when the bonding com pany had to step in and assum e libility w hen the contractor, G rappc, de faulted. County authorities reported th at a new set of plans and specifica tions w ere recently received and th a t as soon as the bonding com pany designates a contractor work will begin It is even possible that the bonding com pany will re-appoint G rappe to do the con struction. G rappe has blamed the arc h i tect for the work stoppage, be cause of w hat he considered an insufficient set of plans, after the county court m ade a change be cause of insufficient funds. All the concrete is poured, and the building lacks interior finish ing. H endricks F u n itu re has opened a branch store in Gold Beach. T he Brookings firm , who has been located here for 12 years leased the Sibley building in Gold '' an *i»ve been .taking loads of funiture to that store. C harlie Y o u n g , ow ner of Y oungs Variety Store, is m anag ing the store for the tim e being for Hendricks. A grand opening will be held very shortly, according to an an- nounccent made by ow ner Archie H endricks. Mrs. Crick and Mrs. Shipw orth w ere on th eir way home after be ing in San Diego to become ac quainted w ith a new m em ber of the family, a son born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed G arity of th at city. Mrs. G arity is a d au g h ter of Mrs. S hipw orth and Mrs. Jaklew icz's sister. A new house will be shown this week end by the Fauerso-Lesmeis- ter Agency. The home located on Iris St. will be show n via the "open house" m ethod. The firm has made all the furnishings, and landscaping, and will have the homes available for F. II. A. approved financing. The three bedroom home has a fire place, two car garage, with all the trim m ings. F iv e G en er a tio n s at Parents to Confer With Teachers A new idea for the Brookings H arbor schools w ill be inaugur ated this next week. The parents and teachers will have an infor mal private conference, beginning Thursday, A pril 11, and extend ing through F riday, April 12. According to principal Chester Bum barger, these conferences w ill supplem ent the school report card, and p are n ts will be able to get a better understanding of their child's progress. All of the elem entary grades from first through sixth will have the conferences, and consequently there will be no school on those days. A ppointm ents have been made w ith the individual parents as to tim es and days. If there is futh er questions parents are invited to call Mr. Bum barger. The council 1 passed a motion, w hich would in effect secure the desired re-zon- ing, although it still has to go through the regular channels. The Commission then had all the rig h t-o 'w ay s cheeked at the A bstract Com pany in Gold Beach, and then sent the m aterial to th e Engineers, who could then go ahead on the calling of bids. It was expected by several of th e Com missioners th at they could call fur bids anytim e w ithin th e next week. Concert Series Tickets Available The Com m unity Coneert ticket sale drive, now underw ay will wind up here this week.
