A pproxim ately, 20 miles vere built in 1956, and the balance is partially com pleted or will be constructed early in 1957. A cooperative agreem ent cov ering construction of about five miles of w ater grade road up the Chetco riv er was com pleted d u r ing the year. The F orest's initial sh are of the project will build about one m ile of road and a perm anent type bridge across the Chetco River. C ontracts for this w ork have been aw arded. This is prim arily a tim ber access road into virgin territo ry . A nother agreem ent has been negotiated covering construction of a road up the south bank of the Rogue River from the end of th e County road, a bridge across I th eriv er, and additional road con- i stru ctio n up L obster Creek to the I forest boundary. Initial Forest Service w ork will construct the th e Rogue River bridge. B ureau of P ublic Roads surveys have been com pleted or are under constract for roads into the Agness area. Ham pshire w ether latnb, bred and shown by P enn sylvania S tate U niveisity, copped Che grand prize a t the In te rn a tional Show in Chicago. Carroll S h a f f n e r w as re sp o n sib le f o r fitting and showing the grand prize H ampshire, and he's shown above as he bids farewell to the winner, tops a t $6.50 per pound on the hoof. 1957 w ill see a satisfactory solu tion to the problem of develop m ent of this area, and at least a sta rt on co n tractin g for initial construction. This w ill open up an area in which no tim ber c u t ting has been done, and be a m ajor step in reaching the allow able tim b er Rogue R iver w orking circle. FIRE CONTROL: The forest had 41 lightning and 13 m an caused fires d u rin g the season. This com pares to a 5 year average of 13. The increase w as due to heavy lightning storm s in August. In spite of the large num ber of fires, b urned acreage was held to 213 total, com pared to a 5 year average of 467. The S m okejum per squad was increased from 32 to 36 jum pers, and enjoyed the busi est season since th e ir organization, w ith a total of 243 sep arate jum ps.
