Oregon Wheat Commission 305 S.W . 10th, Pendleton, Oregon o R E G O N \AZ h EAT We understand that the actual field work hv the state tax commission agent on the re-appraisal of timber holdings in Curry county has not gotten underway. ! wo agents were reportedly on the job now, and others are expected later. This is fine. We’re for it one hundred percent, d 1 is county has needed a re-appraisal in the worst way :inc has needed one for years. But, we wonder, why the delay? 1 he people of me county voted for the re appraisal funds way back in i-r-2. Receipts from the levy were in the assessors office ear»y in 1954, more than two years ago. We know too, mat the contract with the state was held up for almost two years before it was signed. This county dropped from fourth to 14th on the list of counties on the st ite re appraisal schedule. Some counties, Gilliam, Giant, Har ney, Morrow, and Wallowa, have already finished their re-appraisal. In Jackson county, the assessed \aliu <>f timber increased from $1,268,180 to $3,531,920. In G A M M A S IN S T A L L NEW M EM BERS The G am m a Gamm a chapter of the Betas held their regular meet ing Tuesday night at the home of Thelm a Houvila. Betty Seeley w as in charge of the refreshm ents Pat Dent gave a rep o rt on Cos umbfa county the value of timber increased from $139,- 280 to (AN INCREASE OF MORE THAN 600 PERCENT.) We’re sure that we will see a marked increase in toe value of Curry countv timber—and were sure that \\<. will see a marked decrease in the burden that the rest < 4 the taxpayers will have to shoulder. Or perhaps we wdt see increased revenues—to provide more services for co the people. At any rate we’re elated to know that the project has gotten uiulerway, and were happy to know that 1 few citizens working .is a group were instrumental in jarring county officials into expediting the matter. W’e just can’t go along with county assessor Georg« Sutton’s claim that he has k e n “instrumental in getting the lax Commission re-appraisal and equalization In gram for Curry county underway.’ I hat is not a fac* ind that is why we go along with Al Mincer for lounp. assessor. Mincer, we know, will never be content to just sit back and watch the world go by. m etics', and Norm a A rchibald re ported on 'H airdressing’. Five girls w ere initiated into the G am m a group.
