As the b attle -sc arred veteran of public school teaching during the depression years, I w as stru ck tv th e m anner in w hich the picture has changed. In those days which w ere cursed or blessed by a teach er surplus, m em bers of the pro fession w ere more concerned w ith g ettin g a jot) and holding it than they wen* w ith salaries. In fact, so desperate was the situation th at unem ployed teachers w ere offering to teach for less money than those em ployed in o rd er .to get th eir jobs. As can readily be seen, in those days those who w ere doing the hiring hail teach ers over a bnrrei If a hungrey te ac h er d ared to ask for a raise he was quickly mad * aw are of the fact th a t he had no o th e r place to go and th at he had b e tte r be satisfied th a t he hail a job. Consequently re quests wci > few am i far between. Today th e shoe is on th<* o th er foot. W ith a scarcity of teachers and the influx of stu d e n ts into th e public schools increasing a- lardingly, the te ach er rath e h than the school board is novz nam ing the tune. And it is the la tte r condition which gives me cans«* for w orry; for 1 am firm ly j convinced th at a balance of power is more to be desired than to have In a Thunderbird Special V-8 engine* 225 eager "hortes” await your inttructione one faction in com plete control. •A vailable I d Fordomntle Falrlaoaa and Station W agons Any ex trem e is bound sooni r ! or la te r to reach the b u rstin g [mint and the reaction could do j much barm to education. In the final analysis, the ta x p ay er is th e one who m akes the decision, and the tragic p art of it is th a t the tax p ay er is too often m ore in te r ested in his pocketbook than in using good judgem ent. For th at reason alone I would urge the teach ers to use caution in th eir dem ands. W ith each pas sing election, those who pay the taxes are tiecoming m ore resis ta n t; and history shows th a t when tim es get tough, those who are supported from tax revenue are the first to get if in the neck.
