tain tract of timber, some 10,000,000

brought $258 in taxes into the County
treasurer. This figures out as approx
imately 15 TIMES AS MUCH for
the property owner, compared to the
timber owner. T hat is not equitable,
and nobody will convince us otherwise.

A "WHIRLEY BIRD” FOR BROOKINGS?
A helicopter for commuters to
Gold Beach might sound Ike a strange
recommendation—hut we’re not even
sure that we have our tongue in our
«cheek as we write this. Personally a
15 or,20 minute ride by “Whirley Bird”
seems a lot better idea than an hours
(or more) drive over the fiercest high
way in the United States.
’ What we suggest is that the
community buy one of the larger var
iety of helicopters, such as they use to
haul commuters from the airports to
the city. Then we could set up a regular
schedule, say two trips a day to (¡old

Perhaps a whirley bird trans

might even shame the highway depart

the highway department could at least
present a “schedule of improvement”
so we would know how long we are
going to have to wait before “Oregon
