This suggestion seems appropriate because dis eases of the heart and blorid vessels are responsible for more than 52 per cent of all deaths , anil because there is no more effective way to honor the memory of the departed than by a “living memorial'' expressed in terms of a gift to the Heart Fund. Your Heart Fund gift may help others—perhaps even yourself—to additional years of health and liap- iness. It will go to sustain the fight against diseases of the heart and blood vessels through research, edu cation and community heart programs. It is a living memorial to which attaches the lofty and buoyant spirit of hope. These are things to remember when a I Ieart Fund volunteer rings your doorbell next Sunday after noon. Extend to her your thanks for the work she is doing. I lave for her a friendly smile, a warm hand clasp. Insert a generous gift in the Heart Sunday envelope she presents. REMEMBER! Welcome Your Heart Fund Volunteer on I Ieart Sunday, February 26th. Drivers Exams Could Be Different! In our more than two years in living in this great state of Oregon we have found little fault to find with the State Government. And that’s odd, because we are almost professional fault finders. We go out of our way koking for things to pick at. Generally speaking, the state is run on an effic lent progressive basis, Every state has its share of troubles, mainly because of limited budgets, hut ( )regon actually ’eaves little to complain about. I lowever, we just can’t work up any enthus iasm for the w.iy driving licenses are issued here. I bis, perhaps, is strictly a local problem because of the inaccessibility <4 Brookings to the population centers. But it is a definite problem here, and it m.éy he one in other areas of the state. T wice a month, a driving license examiner »pends an afternoon in Brookings, giving examinations md the old city hall is always filled with applicants Always the applicant must waste the whole afternoon take the necessary tests. Why couldn’t some other means he devised? Wouldn’t the state hire additional examiners to relieve he congestion? Most of the applicants would lx- will ng to pay .1 gtxxl sum to finish the test in an hour, ather than four. Thursday afternoon is one of those lays that most people have to earn a living, and four lours off represents quite a piece of cliangt* to the iverage worker. \ not her remedv would he to follow the pro edure used in other states namelv, to put the test hi a !<x 1 h ’sis, with the local police handling the xamitiation. W hen we got our fust license hack East t was only a is minute job .md it could lx- done .it mv tune that the local officers were tree We do Ixlieve hat the hxal police have enough problems during the .seek, hut it could he done. I lie state could argue that 1 trained examiner would do a Ixtter job hut we lis.igree. We think that the hxal officer, Ixcause (4 Ins position of knowing the applicant, might lx- 111 a Ix tter x*sition than the stranger, on the actual driving test \nd, as for the written examination amone could »ive that As we see it, there are a lot of people driving iround in this community today without a license n.iuily because they can t afford the inconvenience md the loss of money—to spend an afternoon taking he examination. uated when 1 finally m astered the b u tto n hook (by the way, w h atev er happened to th e m ? ) in g ettin g my shoes properly s e c u r - ! ed. N atu ra lly , I am som ew hat puzzled as to the ex a ct duties of th is m asculine aide in the bed room. Does he hold the tro u sers properly agape so th a t the in tended in h ab itan t can leap in to them from th e bed? Does be b u tton one’s shirt w hile one is engaged in shaving? Does the victim help at all, or dees he ju st hang limp on a coat hanger w hile th e ex terio r decorator does th e d rap in g ? T hese a re questions which may ap p e ar ridiculous to those not in terested in doing things in th e proper m anner, but for those of us who hold such m a tte rs in the utm ost reverence a crisis is at hand To m ake m atte rs even m ore confusing, T learned, recently, th a t C harles Boyer, w inner of th e n atio n ’s annual aw ard f o r ’ the best dressed man, insisted that no m an should ev er appear on th e stre e t until he had spent an hour at 'east w ith his dress. Personally, I suspect th a t he should be w earing one Probably the reason for Boy er s stan d is th at w ith so much money going into his w ardrobe he cannot ifTord, as th e P res ident can, to hire a g en tlem en s gentlem an to assist him through the m orning ordeal of g etting safely accoutred for facing his public’s critical inspection. In Boyer’s case, though per haps he is acting judiciously.
