CORRECTION ON A 1950 ISSUE On July 6th. 1950, th e following artic le appeared in the Brookings- H arb o r P ilot. A pparently, it was w ritte n for th e purpose of show ing who was rig h t and who was w rong in th e m a tte r of educating fo u r or five C alifornia school children at th e expense of th e Oregon ta x p ay e rs: TH E ARTICLE D istrict No. 17 school board h as ju st received a copy of an opinion from th e d istrict a tto r ney of Curry' County, dated on Ju n e 29. addressed to Mrs. G eor gia From m , C urry County school sup erintendent. T his le tte r a n ! opinion w as sent to the local board in response to a letter, asking to be advised concerning th e residence of the Johnson child ren. The opinion of the d istrict a tto rn e y : "It is my opinion th e residence of th e children her? is the resi dence of th eir parents, who have an undisputed residence w ithin C u rry County. Oregon. T herefore th e children a re entitled to free tu itio n in the Brookings school district, and should be counted as residing in said district for the purpose of establishing th e num ber of residing pupils w ithin said d istrict for punxrse of school as sistance aid.” T his opinion should clearly a n sw er a num ber of articles and le tte rs to the effect th a t B rook ings school board should not have allowed the Johnson children to a tte n d the Brookings school w ith o ut tuition. Among th e num erous protests m ight be cited, the following: 1. A rticle in th e C urry Coun ty R eporter, T hursday, May 25: "W hile it m ay m ake th e enroll m ent look a bit m ore rosy to in clude these five children from California, nevertheless it is and decidedly so, a mosuse of the s ta te basic school support fund as well as a m isuse of the local ta x p ay e rs money to accept child ren from an o th er sta te and no*, collect tu itio n .” 2. L etter from Milton DeMar- tin to Rex P u tn am under date of April 6. 1950 asking th a t Supt. P u tn am discourage th e au th o ri ties of th e Brookings school from accepting or enrolling children from California. 3.
