Paje 4 BROOKINGS HARBOR PILOT FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH By Clifford Rowe Ju st th e o th e r night I attended a banquet On retu rn in g home, I had no sooner opened the door th an the lady of the house popped h e r favorite $64.000 question, "W hat did you have to e a t ? ” Now th e dear lady and I h a w been joined for b e tte r or worse for nigh on tw enty years; and in all th a t tim e w henever I have ea te n out, I have alw ays faced an Inquisition of this so rt on my re tu rn . And although m y answ er is alw'ays th e same, “I don’t rem em ber,” my favorite girl friend never gives u p hoping. The sad tru th in regard to the problem is th a t provision for the proper appreciation and enjoy m ent of food was evidently left out of my physical blueprint when th e prelim inary' planning w as be ing done. And 1 am really sorry. I envy th o re m ales who can readily drool over a tasty dinner; I feel an outcast, one to be sh u n ned and avoided, as I h ear them extol anent the various delect able dishes it has been their good fg rtu n e to consume; and I find m yself cursing the fate that de prives m e o ftbe ecstacies which seem to be theirs. The b ru ta l tru th it th a t as far as I am concerned, food is some th in g w ith which one stokes the firebox in order to keep the old steam • at the proper pressure point in order to get the most efficient service. I tru ly bolive th at if the table conversation was in teresting enough the, hostess could serve me cooked cabbage I which I detest) and I would never know The Low er and D ew ny Real E sta te Office is to re-open soon a t N o rth Bend. Lower, and his m o th er, Mrs. E dith Deveny, used to be Brookings realtors, leaving here around 1948 to conduct a sim ilar business in N o rth Bend w here they w ere q u ite successful. According to th e story in the N orth Bend NEW S, the couple closed th e ir office th ere in 1952, a fte r selling 150 homes, in a devel opm ent project and handling .sev eral o th e r m ajo r transactions. Raymond and his m other followed the real estate business in C al ifornia w here lie has recently been an app raiser for the EHA. As soon as a new location is obtained, his m other will join R ay mond at N orth Bend. th e difference. As a result, I am well aw are th a t I am not popular with h o st esses who hold th a t if a m an fails to e a t a meal sufficient for a log g er facing a hard day, he doesn't like her cooking. Being thoroughly convinced in my own mind th a t it is not necessary to eat m ore than is required to koep m e going until the next repast. I th u s m ake m yself eligible for public enemy No. 1 of the tru e hostess. The one to be tru ly pitied, of course, is my long suffering wife. It m ust be highly discouraging a fte r one has slaved over a hot stove for hours preparing a meal fit for a king, and then a fte r q u e r ying the m a ster as to its quality to have him answer, "ft w as won derful darling, w hat did we h a v e ? ’ I am confident a ju ry would bring in a verdict of justified assau lt if she should w rap a sk il let around his neck. ------ FOR SALE ------ b At RES ll ill m ake .10 nice lots close to shopping centers, C hurches and Schools. 320 foot frontage on Easy S treet. One of th? queries was from a lady right here in the Chetco valtey and the o th e r is an elderly gentlem an who is m ulling over a middle-w estern C hristm as he’ll probably w rite about.
