BLADE CUT
Mrs. F ran k W aldien is having
•uite a time, up at the ranch on
ong Ridge, gettin g used to mod-
rn improv m ent Bennie Jones
lauled out there.
Shu now has a gas range sittin g
alongside the old an cestral wood
b u rn e r and the com parison about
has E sth e r and F ran k floored.
F ra n k 6?cided he w anted a mess
of corn bread and wt nt to touch
off the oven. Because of a tim e
lag betw«’ n tu rn n g on the gas
and getting a m atch fired up,
F ra n k got his first ititia to n into
the thing but didn’t damage ■ his
h air though the illum ination w as
brilliant.
The oven goin" good. E sther
assaytd accum ulating the fund
a m en tals of Johnny C ake and
proceeded to get it ready to bake.
H eretofore, it took quite a spell
to get the old wood range to perc
olating up to Johnny cake baking,
and E sth e r usually had a tim e in
te rv a l of an hour or so. but not,
she soon found out, w ith gas. Ib*
oven beat the b a tte r to readiness.
Then F ra n k a s s a y e d to get out
a hatch of hot calc •• lit the gas.
put the griddle on, w ent to stir
up the sourdough b a tte r and when
he cam e back the griddl ■ had a
fine glow and a couple of hum ps
like a B ach trian camel.
The new’ in stiu m e n t, th e y ’ve
found out, has one advantage and
th at is wh'.’n associated w ith the
Ja v a receptacle. I sed to 1<‘, they
could light the old sm oke-burner,
p rep are and put on th e coffee <md
go back to bed for an hour or so.
Not when you Cook W ith Gas th^y
found out. T hey trie d it! No
sooner w as E sth e r hack for anoth-
r forty w inks th a n the colt ‘C pot
boiled over m d a yard or tw o of
flam e shot tow ard the ceiling
and th e gas w ent out!!
A fter the e th rillin g episodes it
tu rn ed out som 1 of the experientvs
could 1 m ‘ c h a rg e ! to Bennie who
I,ad quite a bit of fun fiddling
w ith the various valves and reg
u lato rs, picking up q u ite a bit ot
know-how for tut l i r e use.
Anyhow, E sth er and L o re tta
and the n v n folks, too welcome
th* new gadg t all around. P
doesn’t heat up the kitchvn like
♦ he old range did and th a t’s some
thing. when the th e rm o m e te r is
up to 104, as it w as the day the
• pw stove w as installed.
