But all joking asiik*. home isn’t

W hen I saw him off on the bu<

going to w ork for the forest ser-

bye, son. I ll see you next fall”
I found it kind of tough to act the
part of a la th e r encouraging his
son to get out into the w orld to
learn to stand on his ow n ft et
I guess that was becausi' it
seems only yesterday th at he was
learning to ta k e his first steps
and 1 w as hovering in the b a c k
ground, prepared to catch him it
hi' w avered so that he w ouldn’t

Somehow I fe d th a t such is
the case for most of us Dads. For
eighteen yt ars. we a re continually
prodding o u r y o u n g sters to grow
up to bo men; and at th e sam •
tim e vve a re c o n stan tly on tin
a le rt to keep them from sufferin'*,
m ore than th e ir share of bruises
And then ts'fore we know it,
alm ost overnight, th e son becomes
a m an and our job is donev Ano
w hile w e’re m ighty proud we are
also ju s, a hi, lonely.
