M uch th o u g h t should be given to a diversified econom y w ich I firm ly believe is possible in th is area. I have re cen tly talk ed to people engaged in th e m a n u fa c tu re of wood by p ro d u cts who have expressed an in tere st in com ing to th is area, th is I believe would be a fine ex am p le of diversifying o u r in d u stry if p la n ts of this n a tu re could be induced to com e to B rookings. O u r C ham ber of Com m erce has done m uch to point out th e ad v an tag e s w e h av e h ere and I feel th a t we should u n ite and redouble o u r efforts to get m ore in d u stry to this area. It has com e to m y a tte n tio n th at the neighboring city of Gold Beach has recently m ade a successful tra n sitio n from p riv ate ow nership of th e ir w a te r supply to city ow n ership. In m y y e a rs in th e lu m b er in d u stry I have perso n ally supervised m uch road construction and m ain ten an ce. T his does not m ean th a t I am not open to advice on the m aintenance of o u r s tre e ts b u t I do feel th a t I h av e a defin ite o b jectiv e in m ind to im prove the condition of o u r s tre e ts w ith o u t increasin g o u r m ain ten an ce costs. I am defin itely ag a in st an ex ten siv e ce n te r s trip paving p ro ject at this tim e. W e m u st firs t p u t o u r ro ad s in shape w ith p ro p e r g ra d in g and d rain ag e and d e te rm in e w-here ad d itio n al w a te r and sew er lines a re to go so th a t we do not w ork u n d u e h ard sh ip on ta x p a y e rs in the fu tu rp . In recen t w eeks false s ta te m e n ts have been circu lated tjia t I favor a "w id e-o p en ” tow-n and th a t vice w ill ru n ra m p a n t in B rookings if I am elected m ayor. I know- who some of th e individuals a re who are circu latin g these vicious falsehoods but I plished by low ering th e level o f th e cam paign do not believe th a t an y th in g w ill be accom - to a m ud slinging affair. I m erely w ish to d a te th a t th ese s ta te m e n ts a r e u tte rly ri diculous. I h av e prom ised no one a jo b in the city a d m in istra tio n if I am elec ted m ay o r nor have I prom ised any of m y su p p o rte rs any favors. Should I be elected I w ill striv e to keep all d e p a rtm e n ts of o u r city g o v ern m ent o p eratin g as efficiently, fairly , and econom ically as it is in m y pow-er to do. I do not feel th a t we should c o n te m p la te additional p ark s in o u r city in th e n e a r fu tu re. We shall h av e too m an y o th e r d ev el opm ents th a t w e m u st spend o u r m oney on for a long tim e to come. W e h av e tw o b ea u tiful s ta te p ark s in o u r city lim its and I think th a t w-e should w ork to w a rd o b tain in g additional re c re a tio n a l fa cilities in these parks, p a rtic u la rly in A zalea P a rk . A dditional re c re a tio n facilities should be developed in o u r city, p a rtic u la rly fo r o u r y oungsters. This, how ever, can n o t be accom plished by th e city a d m in is tra tio n alone. Such activ ities should be p ro m o ted th ro u g h the joint effo rts of o u r ch u rch es, o u r school au th o rities, o u r civic o rg an izatio n s, th e city au th o rities, and all of you as citizen s of Brookings. I shall be h ap p y to w o rk w ith any in terested individuals to w ard th is goal w h e th e r o r not 1 am elec ted m ay o r of B rookings in the com ing election. N eith er m y opponent o r m y self w ould be able to begin to solve th e p roblem s w hich will b< con tin u ally lacin g us w ith o u t th e co o p era tion of a t least a m a jo rity of o u r fellow- citizens and th e co o p eratio n of neig h b o rin g com m unities.
