EDITORIAL ON EDITORIALS
W h at m akes a n ew sp ap er w rite e d ito ria ls?
Is it
n e c e sa a ry ?
W hy should a new spaper alone out of all b u si
nesses in a com m u n ity stick th e ir neck out on co n tro v e rsial
issues of th e day, and in c u r the w ra th of th e c itiz e n ry ?
W hy
should a n ew sp ap er jeopardize it’s business by ta k in g a stand,
o r a side?
M any reasons a re advanced for doing ju s t th a t.
We
feel th at one of the m ain reasons for having a co m m u n ity new s
p a p e r is above and b e y o rd th e m é re p rin tin g of local news,
and ad v e rtisin g m essages.
W e feel th a t an ed ito rial encourages
people to th in k for th em selv es and not ju s t to digest m a te ria l
and accept it as fact.
An e d ito rial sets p eople to th in k in g
if it is rig h t o r w rong, if they ag re e o r disagree.
O ften it
b rin g s a m ore a n im a te reaction, and brings the p erso n ch a rg in g
dow n to th e “ p rin tin g oflice” to let th em know th ey a r e all
w et.
T his w e like.
W e’re ju s t hu m an s down h ere too.
W e can m ak e
m ista k e s and we often do.
W e don’t propose to sit up here
on a gold th ro n e and tell th e people of B ro o k in g s-H a rb o r w h at
to do, and w hen to do it.
W e do som e th in k in g , though, and
th en w e’re in a position to sit down at th e ty p e w rite r and say
w h at we th ln k k , so th a t you can re ad it, and th in k about it,
an d give us y o u r reactions.
W hen we print an editorial we don’t say T H IS SH O U LD
B E D O N E, r a th e r we say, W E T H IN K this should be done.
Its a big difference.
To us, a new sp ap er w ithout local ed ito ria ls is a dead
p ap e r, and lack s co urage to say w hat they think.
W e c e rta in ly
d on't w ant to m ak e enem ies, but m ore im p o rta n t, w e don’t
w an t to be classed in th e spinelss categ o ry eith er.

IMPORTANT MEASURES ON BALLOT
T h ere a re a lot of im p o rtan t m easu res on th e ballot
n ex t Wcx'k. It will ta k e a lot of thought for people to w ade
th ro u g h th e tw o ballots, th e city and the county, in o rd e r to
in s u n ' th a t th ey a re m a rk in g them in the rig h t w ay.
M easures on th e ballot call for such v aried item s as
daylight saving tim e, rep ealin g m ilk control law. and th e
estab lish in g of a m en tal hospital n e a r P o rtla n d . E ach and
everyone of th ese d eserves som e thought.
H ow ever, th e m ost im p o rtan t thing to local people is
on th e city ballot
T h e n ' a referen d u m vote calls for a new
tax base to be estab lish ed here.
T h e re is no need to go into g reat d etail on th e tax base.
It is alm ost sufficient to say th a t th e proposed ra ise it has had
ver> little opposition from a m soureje. and it e e rta in ls is not
K in g m ade an issue in th e local election as fa r as we know.
Too. the proposed raise w as recom m ended by a citizens
co m m ittee co n sisting of F renchy A rrell, Lynn H am pton. W illian
C rissey, and L u th e r T isdale.
The im p o rta n t thing to rem em b er about th e tax raise
is th at it d o esn’t necessarily m ean th a t the ad d itio n al am ount
w ill be budgettxl. but r a th e r it allow s the city th a t opportum tv
It is very n ecessary for th e perm ission to raise be given this
year, as th e tax base can lie raised only at a g en eral election,
w hich w on’t be held u n til 1956. T his w ould m ean th a t the
c it\ would be sh o rt of o p eratin g revenue until 1957. and a grow
ing co m m unity such as B rookings can t afford to be in th a t
position.
A vote for th e ra isin g of th e tax base, wy b eliew , is
a vote to w ard s th e fu rth e rin g the progress of B rookings.
